Samuel Purdey started out in late 1993. Before forming Samuel Purdey Barney Hurley had a brief spell touring with Acid Jazz old boys Jamiroquai and Mother Earth, as well as occasional session appearances with amongst others, Robbie Gordon of Gil Scott Heron fame. Gavin Dodds also had a life before Samuel Purdey recording and touring with Jamiroquai. 
The pair worked with Acid Jazz who included their Tower of Power cover of “Clever Girl” on Totally Wired 11. Quickly however they moved on and signed to the Sony backed “Good Sounds” label which would become their home for the recording of their first and to date, only album, “Musically Adrfit”, released in 1999.
Samuel Purdey’s 1999 album “Musically Adrift” was exactly that. Right record, wrong time; a little known classic released only in Japan but nevertheless a timeless body of work. Known for their muscular groove oriented jazz/funk style, these UK players emulated a more Blue Eyed Soul and soft rock approach that aligned with their influences; Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire, Hall & Oates, and Tower Of Power. Produced by multi-grammy winner Elliot Scheiner and Bob Power (A Tribe Called Quest/De La Soul), the pedigree of this cult gem is further validated by the extensive use of well regarded session musicians; 70s session guitarist Elliott Randall, Robbie Gordon (Gil Scott Heron), Frank Floyd (known for his vocal work on Steely Dan's Gaucho and Fagen's Nightcrawler), as well as original Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender, and Jan Kincaid and Andrew Levy of the The Brand New Heavies. This ‘Remastered’ version is available for the first time on Vinyl, 180 grams in thick tip-on jackets.
