"Haunting, epic pop" - Rough Trade 

Like the unearthing of the tombs themselves, Channel Cairo employ excavatory tactics in their song writing.  The results of their labours, as debut single Elephant Room prove, are songs that hold treasure troves of melody.  They are rich in all the qualities that suggest that Channel Cairo could be a band who go on to be as timeless as the city they were named after.

Josh Bowyer, lead singer and keyboard player of Channel Cairo has always had a double-edged love for Cairo after he was kidnapped, ever so briefly, there at the age of 9. Happily young Josh was returned to his parents unharmed but this mysterious and ancient North African capital had already possessed his heart and mind. 

Fast forward to a rainy English night in the tunnels of Waterloo.  There, Bowyer rendezvoused with old friends Hamish Murtagh (guitar), Joe Cross (bass), James Gardiner (drums) and in time honoured fashion a band was formed. It became a five-piece when French guitarist, Luke Saunders was revealed to them at an open-mic night some weeks later. 

When it came to a name for the band Bowyer was still haunted by Cairo and then fate once again stepped in, drummer James Gardiner revealed that Howard Carter, the godfather of Egyptology, was in fact close friends to his great great grandfather Sir Alan Gardiner who deciphered the hieroglyphs, with that, Channel Cairo was born. The artwork for the single actually uses a letter from Carter to Sir Alan Gardiner discussing his discoveries from the tombs of Luxor.

The band began throwing around concepts, harmonies, rhythms and scores like a magician’s box of tricks. The songs went through a chameleon-like set of changes but soon they had a collection of songs and they started gigging across London. This led to supports with James Yuill and Wave Machines and finally got them noticed by Laissez-Faire Club (The Collectable Few, Ice Black Birds) who fell in love with their debut track Elephant Room.
The track itself, has been produced by Tom Fuller (Patrick Wolf and David’s Lyre) and it came about in a wash of ideas from all members. In what has become their preferred method of working, the track was discarded, returned to and generally re-jigged eight times before finally there became a method to their madness and Elephant Room burst from the musical tomb of discards. Perhaps future listeners will hear it and recognise it as a timeless, classic with epic ambition and poignant widescreen vision

Once in a while a singer comes along who reminds us that the foundations of great, long-lasting music are simpler than we’d like to admit. Lucy Rose is just such a person: deeply musical, scarily direct in her writing, free of hipster-ism and scene allegiance in her outlook and in possession of a uniquely poignant voice. As her growing numbers of early adopting fans already know, her music is a pure thing, and a lovely thing and a thing to get you through the times when the world hasn’t gone your way.

Like a 21st century Dick Whittington, armed with her guitar and a sense of bravado and adventure that can only belong to the very young, an eighteen year old Lucy Rose finished her exams, waved goodbye to the Warwickshire hamlet she had grown up in and headed for the Smoke.  She threw herself in at the deep end with a wild abandon: Open-mic nights in east end pubs, busking grimy street corners, tumbling into late night bars, befriending the city’s oddballs, strange encounters on night buses and unearthed misfits all informed her.  With her icy blue eyes wide open she took it all in.   

An early demo caught the ear of Edith Bowman, it led to playing at Mumford & Sons club night and from there an ongoing creative friendship with Bombay Bicycle Club; Lucy Rose featured on the title track of their ‘Flaws’ album, duetting and touring with the band. All the while Lucy honed her craft. Like the ever-changing cityscape, she constructed and then deconstructed her songs.  Some stayed, others went.  Her journey has now led to her headline shows selling out in minutes and her postings on YouTube easily clocking views in the hundreds of thousands (the influential Watch Listen Tell session of her song Night Bus has received 300,000 views alone).  The songs are hallmarked by Lucy’s flawed crystal voice, her wicked asides and skewed sense of humour. It is these contradictions that make Lucy Rose a young songwriter and performer beyond the average.  Her songs may at their essence be delicate millefeuilles but every one of those thousand layers is glassy and barbed. The armchair listener can choose to wash them down with Lucy’s own brand of tea (now available at her gigs) Builder’s Grey™. No Lapsang or Orange Pekoe for this lass!

For someone who has scooted and swooped gleefully under the mainstream radar, Monday 8th August and the release of her first single, Middle of the Bed will be just one of many milestones for this urchin debutante. Produced by Charlie Hugall  (Florence & The Machine, Jack Peñate, Crystal Fighters) Middle Of The Bed comes with four remixes including one by Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jack Steadman. Every now and then a thing of musical beauty really does last forever.

To term, Newcastle natives Let’s Buy Happiness as a fledgling band seems inappropriate.  They have spent the last two years amassing an unquestionable presence in the consciousness of fans of their unique and ethereal, arctic-stung, indie rhapsodies.  
Their story began with the Six Wolves single release in late 2010 and slowly but surely LBH have been mastering their craft, the old fashioned way.  Fast Fast (Produced by Frankie & The Heartstrings guitarist Mick Ross) was next up and it paved the way to their second successive Glastonbury festival booking.  Let’s Buy Happiness have played support to both the estimable Temper Trap and the ever resplendent Frankie & The Heartstrings.  
All the while the band gigged and gigged, playing over 400 shows in the last two years. The hard work paid off with recognition from Radio1 in the form of a covetable slot playing the Introducing stage at the 2011 Big Weekend (predecessors include Stornoway, Florence & the Machine and Bombay Bicycle Club), which followed Maida Vale Sessions for both Radio1 and 6Music. 
This work ethic translated to their song writing too.  Happiness and good songs could not be bought for them and so demos were recorded and discarded but with each self-imposed rejection the five-piece found that their song-writing muscles were becoming lean and sinuous.  After spending the last six months demoing track after track, Let’s Buy Happiness are finally ready to release their third single Dirty Lakes.
Dirty Lakes is as much a statement of intent as a platinum bound progression, an exponential leap forward from Let’s Buy Happiness. 
Dirty Lakes is dark, happy, elegant, bright and youthful. It layers all of these motifs with intricate instrumentation and is accordingly a timeless classic-in-waiting.  The fledgling North-Easterners have found their wings and are expecting to fly.

Despite having formed less than 12 months ago, LET’S BUY HAPPINESS sound like a band that have been around for years; the delayed guitars, tight formation and clipped Nordic-sounding vocals of lead singer Sarah Hall - reminiscent of Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins or Sugarcubes era Björk - make LET’S BUY HAPPINESS one of the most exciting bands moving forward to 2011. 

Crystallising in early 2009, in a rare truce from sibling rivalry, this barely legal 5 piece from Newcastle came together when twenty one year old Sarah Hall was asked to front her little brother’s band. Sarah joined brother James Hall (guitar), Graeme Martin (guitars), Mark Brown (bass) and James King (drums) and together LET’S BUY HAPPINESS began to distil their mutual love of North American alt-indie bands such as Modest Mouse, Tokyo Police Club, Brand New and Trapped In Kansas into the polar tinged, aqueous ice blasts of sound that lift their songs into a host of near-celestial formations.

With the youngest member of the band barely legal and with internet as the air they breathe and instant communication and DIY ethics as their life blood it was inevitable that their path should start with the self release of ep Not Hot Ashes late 2009. These unique atmospheric compositions gained early support from Tom Robinson and Lauren Laverne of 6music. A coveted and outstanding Maida Vale live session was theirs as part of the BBC’s Introducing Week. The success and the autonomy didn’t stop there, as they were personally invited to tour with bands such as The Temper Trap, Idlewild and The Futureheads and most recently performed at this year’s Glastonbury on the John Peel stage.

Fast forward to October of 2010 and they release their single Six wolves, it receives an outstanding response from press such as NME,Q and Guardian just to name a few. The single went straight onto the B-list at 6music. They are set to release their well-awaited album in the summer of next year. With already key muso fans behind them such as Sean Adams at Drowned in Sound and Tom Robinson at 6music, LETS BUY HAPPINESS will surely be a band to watch out for in 2011.
