Josh Baker  - What Will It Be

Under his pen name Chlär, Charles Accarisi sets forth with a full rig manifestation of techno that jolts from one trunk-rattler to the next. From his native Switzerland to his adoptive home Berlin, the potency of his sound has followed him and grown ever larger, an assertive strain of dyed-in-the-wool techno that’s groovy and layered as a mountain rock. Working over and above his standard DJ duties, across A&R, events and sound engineering, Chlär practices full-involvement in much of the music pipeline, starting with his own sound and that of new finds and ending with the music’s final dialogue in public space. He’s been keeping busy, and as half of Funk Assault, co-runner of Bipolar Disorder Rec and founder of Primal Instinct his plate’s more than full, but his just-released first full album on the latter label shows little signs he’s tiring. The Architects of Shadows explores current political and sociological themes as broad as nationalism and social atomisation, rifts that through his many roles in music, he’s working hard to bridge. The promise of that newly connected world comes alive through the primacy of his beats, looping, packed with meaning but immediate nonetheless. Bassiani Podcast 248 is an hour and a half of dizzying basslines and all encompassing loops that bear witness to Chlär’s undeniable skill as techno selector. These are future-ready beats from a techno polymath.

Alex Humann - Interlude I

Emerging in Berlin post-pandemic (2021), Regent has fast become one of the techno capital’s most promising new figures. From Tresor to RSO to Else, his driving sound has been eagerly taking stock of the city’s unparalleled past and carving out an aesthetic in service of its future. Riffing out this rich heritage, his rapid grooves and full-bodied textures balance prime-time warehouse energy with a reverential focus toward machine-based sound that delivers big on its ambitions. His time in the studio has been just as productive, with an abundance of releases on labels like Mutual Rytm, ARTS and Clergy, and Blue Hour and Philippa Pacho’s Positive Source and Phorum to name a few. Last year’s Permean was a gnarly, heavyweight, return-to-basics release dispatched alongside Sterac and Shed-remixed variants that demonstrated his affinity with techno’s core. His primal and twitchy rendition of the genre is pulling in industry veterans as well as crowds, and the momentum keeps on building. For this latest Podcast, the native Berliner navigates tension and deft control, and offers a mentally-driven, immersive number that swells with visceral force. This is an hour-long outing from a rising star of techno, recorded live at the Mutual Rytm night in December.

Bassiani Podcast 301 sees Italian DJ/producer Rorschack (Augusto Candeloro) take the reins with his streamlined take on psytrance, techno and groove-driven beats. Taranto born and Milan based, he joined Rome’s Timeless posse and their 12-hour raves in 2013, before starting up his own venture under the epithet Closer (Milan). Under the latter, his supervision and ongoing residency fuse connection and a tight curatorial approach that have left the city under his spell and cast a longer shadow on some of Europe’s hottest venues: FOLD, Tresor, Gare Porto, et al. His studio releases count labels like Fides, ANAOH, Out Of Place and Groove Disorder among its list of outlets, and a string of his self released work bears on its covers his namesake’s shapeless mark. His rapidly-sequenced beats too, offer the kind of deep immersion from which a chain reaction of free-association and body movement find both personal meaning and sharper form: this is the kind of techno that calls for gut understanding more than rationalized approach and dance as the solution. For this latest episode, the beats roll on: 85 minutes of purist, thumping sounds, killer frequencies from a master of the genre.
