This mastery session is all about big lessons to win at life. What I wanted to do is let you in under the kimono a little bit and share a number of the lessons that have been of service to me as I've walked through the journey of my life so far. I must confess to you, I am no guru, in my book "The Greatness Guide" one of the first things I said, I think it was the first chapter which is, I'm no guru. I'm a work in progress, I am not the ideal but I have a lot of ideals. I am far from perfect, but my dream and my hope is that by the end of my life, and I hope I get to live a long life, I live so many of the ideals that I aspire to. I think that's the part about being human, we have these ideals and every single day, when we fall we get back up. When we get a little off course we have the opportunity to get back on course. 

A number of summers ago I was flying from Zimbabwe to White River, South Africa, and we were in a little plane and the pilot allowed me to fly the plane. It was really a fascinating experience because behind the controls there was this needle, this dial. He said, "Just make sure the needle stays at the center of the dial and we're going to be absolutely fine." Literally there were the winds and the forces taking this little plane off and all I had to do was turn the, I don't know if you'd call it a steering wheel, but the controls back to bring the needle front and center so we stayed on course. We get off course and on course, and isn't life like that? Every single day we get taken off course. We get busy versus focused. We want to do the run or we want to do the work out but there's this seduction by some kind of a distraction. We have an ideal of being world-class in our work but there's this attraction to sort of taking a little short cut. Literally every single day is an opportunity to get back on course with that needle of your world-class ideals. I wanted to offer you some ideas that have really served me well, because I'm just like you, I'm trying to aspire to the top of the mountain over the course of the rest of my life

The first idea that life has really taught me is really this: Small wins matter. I mean we sometimes think an epic life occurs one sunny Friday afternoon when the stars line up and something revolutionary occurs. What I'm suggesting to you with great love and great respect is, a great life is not built by revolution. A great life is built by evolution. Small and steady wins the race. What you do everyday is far more important than what you do once every decade. I want you to really think about that idea. What you do everyday is simply your life in miniature. As you live every single day, so you are crafting your life. What you do over the next hour is really building your future. If you can just get and if I can just get every single pocket of 24 hours right as best as we humanly can, the rest of our life is going to take care of itself.

Small wins matter. The moment in front of the customer where the pull was to go average and you become a merchant of wow, sets you up for the next day of a way of being of wow. The little win with your family when you feel like watching TV sets you up for another win the next day. A little win of getting up at 5 O'clock and running your morning routine sets you up for a habit of a 5 A.M.  club morning routine. Small daily improvements over time will lead you to stunning results. Tiny wins are the way to greatness.

This mastery session is all about how I stay creative. The first insight I want to offer to you with great respect is, whether you're a bookkeeper or a banker, whether you're a taxi driver or a hamburger flipper, whether you're a student or filmmaker, you are a creative. When we think of the word creative, we think of people who are in ad agencies or often we think of artists. But whatever you do everyday is your craft, whatever you do everyday, you have the opportunity and I suggest you have the responsibility to produce your art. What you release out into the world will determine what the world sends back to you. You are a creative. 

My life changed when I was a litigation lawyer and I was working on this project for this law society that I was working for in my free time. I was putting together this project and we're going to be bringing together all these different lawyers for the others lawyers in the city. My co-partner on this project said, "You know, Robin, you're extremely creative." That sort of woke something up inside of me and it turned me on to the fact that I have creativity inside of me and it was just this light bulb or "A-ha!" moment. I suggest the same to you, which is regardless of what you do or where you live in the world, you have creativity inside of you. 

One of my favorite questions is what would the little child that you once were think of the adult that you've become? When you were a little kid, your eyes sparkled. When you were a little kid, you loved producing art into the world. What has happened to that, if anything? I want you to start thinking like Da Vinci. I want you to wake up your inner Picasso. I want you to find that Van Gogh inside of you. Regardless of what you do, I want you to connect to your creative wellspring that longs to show up fully in the world.

With that insight, that you are a creative person and you have art within, I'm going to share with you six tactics that will allow you to do what I suggest:

Number one. We live in a world of dramatic distraction. Most people are suffering from broken focus syndrome. It has never been so easy to be seduced by the shiny toys of modern society and spend the best hours of your best days doing not much of anything. The first tactic that I offer to you is build your life and your work flow around what I call tight bubbles of total focus. That might mean blocking out three times a week, from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock on your written schedule because what gets scheduled gets done, and during that 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock tight bubble of total focus, you turn off all your technology. When you hear those bells ring and the notifications fly, it has actually been compared neurobiologically to the sound of a scream. I want to make that with great precision, that point, which is the sound of a phone ringing, has been compared in terms of your internal response neurobiologically to the sound of a scream. But if it happens constantly everyday, it becomes your new normal. Pretty interesting point, no?
