Recently my pal Mark and I recorded his drums in the creepy old basement at Halcyon Books, Greenwich, London. We got a nice, spacy sound from the small room and curved walls, which I used to create an EXS24 sampler instrument in Logic Pro X. This track is just a little demo of how the sampler sounds, so feel free to download it and try it out yourself!

The reverb in the room was fairly short but erratic, so all the individual drum sounds are in stereo, making use of the room/overhead mics. No sound is consistently central – for example, every kick sound ends up leaning a tiny bit to the right or left for some reason.

There are also two different snare sounds in this track and in the sampler instrument – a narrower one and a wider one, used in the verse and chorus respectively. They sound pretty funky when played one after the other, though you can't really make it out in the context of a busy rock track.

Some of it's pretty cool, some of it's less than perfect – whatever, just download it yourself and see if you can use it somewhere init
