Counted among a handful of rock'n'rollers who have been around from the beginnings of original rock music made in India in the early 1990s to its now-booming status, Sandip Roy has carved out his place as one of the most sought-after bass players in the country for over two decades. Best known for his decade-long stint with pioneering Bangla rock band Cactus, Sandip started out with his instrument of choice in 1991, quickly cementing his position as the bottom-end guy with a deep pocket with the Kolkata-based alternative rock band WISE in 1994. The band went on to garner rave reviews in the college circuit in India in the mid-1990s, being the first band to be featured in the prestigious Great Indian Rock series of concerts and original rock compilations pioneered by the Rock Street Journal magazine.

In 2001, Sandip joined Cactus, taking on bass duties that spanned 12 years and three major-label albums: Rajar Raja (2004), Tucchho (2008) and the band's latest, Blah Blah Blah (2013). Venerated for his rock-solid musicianship and a force to reckon on stage, Sandip remained Mr Dependable on bass as the band went through a series of line-up changes involving guitar players and vocalists.

Sandip was the founder member of one of the most talked-about bands in Indian alternative rock, Five Little Indians, with a group of close friends and musical colleagues in 1997, featuring members from local heavies Span, Cactus, Lakkhichhara and Cassini's Division.

As part of a trio project, Sandip went on to put his stamp on Nishkromon, Fossils' frontman Rupam Islam's third solo release, with guitarist/composer Allan Ao and drummer/composer Arka Das. The album has been hailed as one of the seminal Bangla rock albums in recent times. Sandip and Arka worked as the rhythm section of choice for the music director duo Rupam-Allan, their work being spoken of highly for OSTs to films like Bedroom, ETC. He has also collaborated with Ratul the guitar player of Cactus in many of his side projects. He has numerous collaborations.
