I've been working on this for about a month (give or take some time on the songs I remastered) and my sister Raxi was kind enough to provide me with cover art. The Song That Crows Sing - Avanna

So I've been sitting on an unfinished draft of this song for quite some time. I was never really sure the way I wanted to go about it and when the new year rolled around, I realized that this was when the song was meant to be finished.

***WARNING: Mentions of suicide and self harm ahead.***
I should probably preface this with a few reasons for this song existing. Back when I was drafting Self-Portrait (my last published EP), I wanted the songs to be deeply personal and one of the things I have experienced was suicide. In 2010, my junior year of high school, I was very depressed and had mentally bricked myself into a corner. The only option I saw for myself was suicide. I took the small stock of my medication I hadn't been taking and had instead been stockpiling and went to bed, ready to never wake up again.

As you can probably guess, I didn't die. In fact, my attempted suicide is one of the most painful things that I have ever personally experienced. It was not clean like I imagined. I don't just pass away in my sleep like I wanted. It was messy. It was dark. It was awful. I hated it.

I hurt a lot of people I loved. I woke up in a hospital room, crying because I knew I didn't really want to die, with a tube down my throat and my dad holding my hand. I wrote "I'm sorry" over and over again on the paper that they provided me to communicate with because I was. I didn't mean to hurt them. I just wanted to stop hurting. I wound up spending some time in a nut house (and I'm sorry, I literally do not know the actual term for those places) and when I got out I was on new medication and I was sure Iwasn't going to make that mistake again.

My friends later told me that they were terrified and they thought that they'd never see me again.

I'm reminded every time the new year rolls around that there are people that weren't as lucky as I was. They didn't get found and made to vomit. They didn't get to see the new year. They achieved their goal. They died.

This song was written as a reminder to me of the people would would miss me if I was to try again and as a gift to those who are thinking about that sort of escape. There is a new year coming forward. We have crossed the horizon, you and I. You made it past 2015 and you sure as hell can make it past 2016. I believe in you. You can do it.

But for those that didn't: may this be your eulogy. I may not have known you, but you were the light of someone's life and they still love you even now. Thank you for your time here on earth. We miss you.

I went with an oddly vague thing but, BUT! I played all the backing tracks on my flute. That's right, Sandr plays the flute! I haven't touched the thing in five years when out of nowhere the urge to play my flute for this song hits and I just NEED to do it. So I do.

(I was going to sing it but my singing is shitt and I feel better using vocal synths cause I have the ability to pick from various voice types and feels. Plus Sweet ANN is my voice of choice. [She's right in my range.])
