Nikko.Z's Dopamine White wraps up a strong spring season by welcoming Jadon Fonka to the label for his debut EP. Sri Lankan artist Anupa Fonseka aka Jadon Fonka released his first project in 2017, and over the course of the last seven years has followed a seldom travelled path. Rather than focus on one distinctive style, Jadon has released EDM, Electro House, House, Progressive House and more. A project via Hardwell's Revealed Recordings in 2019 has been a discography highlight, earning the support of EDM tastemakers such as Timmy Trumpet, Mike Williams, Lumberjack and many more. 2023 would see Jadon put a firmer focus on progressive house however, becoming one of the genre's more prolific newcomers and in turn recording projects for 3rd Avenue, BCSA, Droid9 and SLC-6 Music, amongst others. Now following a well-received debut for Balkan Connection, Jadon adds Dopamine White to his resume with 'Former Times / Perfect Crime'. Beginning with 'Former Times', Jadon continues his club-effective progressive style. Full of charged energies, the Colombo resident expertly blends punchy kick drums and electric grooves with crunchy rhythms and astral sonics. Granular effects, deconstructed vocals and hopefully melodies steal the air, furthering the first movement leading into the break. A thought-provoking vocal sample takes centrestage here, bringing with it moments of anticipation and intrigue, before swirling atmospheres melt down amidst a bed of clustered drums and rumbling sonics, perfectly setting the stage for a drop of main room alchemy. The companion piece 'Perfect Crime' finds Jadon flexing a groovier side of his repertoire. Powerful beats and chunky basslines serve as the anchor for cross-cultural motifs, muted bass stabs and a strong effects narrative to intertwine for a smooth yet uplifting first act. The breakdown delivers a strong dose of controlled chaos, as orbiting effects, waves of noise and an ominous vocal sample unite, before a rush of drums and gritty textures cues an epic finale to round out the EP on a large note.

Echo Dafts Mental is a deep dive into the hypnotic side of nu-progressive house, driven by a relentless groove and an electrifying vocal that pushes the energy into uncharted territory. The original is raw and untamed, with a unique vocal sample weaving through pulsating basslines and crisp percussion. Swirling synth textures rise and fall, creating a sense of controlled chaos—dark yet infectious, designed to send dance floors into a frenzy. Brazils André Gazolla delivers a remix that turns up the heat, refining the originals intensity into a high-energy, peak-time weapon. His version retains the vocal but twists it into something even more mind-bending, layering it over rolling bass and intricate drum programming. Midway through the set, the rain came down hard for a solid 35 minutes—but instead of stopping, the party just shifted. People found shelter, but no one stopped dancing. I looked up from the decks and saw movement everywhere—in every little corner and under every roof, the energy stayed alive.

ALPHA21 LIVE @ IN THE MOMENT,Bandarawela (2025.04.19)

… The third and final interpretation of ‘Die Like A Hero’ is supplied by Subandrio who is making his second appearance on Balkan Connection. The Sri Lankan producer first appeared on the Serbian imprint with his remix of Napalm & d-phrag’s ‘For The Love of Machines’ in June of this year. It preceded his release on Perspectives Digital where he was announced as one of the winner’s in the labels ‘Outliers’ remix competition. Subandrio is still vastly underrated in the underground, his style is quite in line with what’s currently fashionable in the progressive new school and it’s only a matter of time before he fully breaks through. There’s a slew of great material forthcoming so the remainder of 2015 and on into 2016 looks quite promising for him. Can’t say I’ve ever heard something from Subandrio which didn’t sound great and he’s turned in a superb remix of ‘Die Like A Hero’ to close the release out. His rough and rugged basslines cut though nicely here and some well placed, delicately polished melodies add a very ethereal touch. A dramatic break pushes it over the edge with a smooth exhilarating build welcoming the return of those perfectly contoured grooves. Just a massive remix from Subandrio again and a great end to the release. Don’t miss it.
