JOHNNY GAMBIT is "Miami Vice" meets "Akira" meets "Mister X" in Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS with elements of DARK CITY.

PROLOGUE:

JANUARY 1st, 1959 and SEVENTH CITY is America's fastest-growing metropolis. A futuristic dream city built on the ashes of World War II. A testing ground for leading-edge technologies and prototype consumer products designed to be seven years ahead of the general U.S. population, hence the city's name.

Competely owned and operated by the RAYTHEON CORPORATION, the city fathers and the European expatriate genius inventor MIES VAN DER FLUGT promise a new kind of engine that will provide FREE, CLEAN ENERGY to the citizens of SEVENTH CITY --forever!

On January 1st, New Year's Day (the day of the Cuban Revolution in our world), the city fathers, with great fanfare, throw the switch to activate the massive RESISTANCE ENGINES deep beneath the city. But an unforeseen SIDE EFFECT occurs. The sky goes red.

THE BARRIER.

An impenetrable FORCE FIELD surrounds the city almost instantly, cutting it off from the rest of the world. Nothing can penetrate it, not even TV or radio signals.

CUT TO PRESENT DAY.

Over 60 years after the INCIDENT, Seventh City survives, like a World's Fair City of the Future gone to seed. Its mighty ART DECO skyline still thrusts high into the air due to ELECTROMAGNETIC innovations that allow higher buildings to be built. MINISTRY TOWER--the building that houses City bureaucracy and much of its ruling elite--dominates the skyline. 

Into this dystopia comes the electromag drag-racing, techno club-owning, part-time private detective JOHNNY GAMBIT (not his real name), a punk-rock, urban troubleshooter with a vague past.

Now in the present day, trouble begins when a mysterious girl appears, claiming to have the formula to collapse the BARRIER and free Seventh City. But the generational heirs of Seventh City industry, THE SCION CLUB, backed by the shadowy TECHNOCLERICS, like the status quo just the way it is!

The music on offer is richly textured, and though techno's thundering pulse plays a major role in the proceedings, Fengler also finds time to flirt with various house tropes and explore both darkly dubby and brightly melodic passages. Beyond that, the whole thing has been expertly mixed, which comes as little surprise given the man's impressive pedigree.

Jeff Mills is an American techno DJ and producer who has been active in the electronic music scene since the 1980s. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential figures in techno music and has been credited with helping to develop the genre from its roots in Detroit into a global phenomenon.

Jeff Mills began his career as a DJ in the early 1980s and in 1987 he joined the group Underground Resistance, which became a major force in the development of techno music. He later went on to establish his own record label Axis Records and has produced numerous solo albums as well as collaborations with other artists.

One of Mills' most significant projects is his Purpose Maker label which he launched in 1997. Purpose Maker was created as a platform for Jeff Mills to explore new sounds and experiment with different genres and has been responsible for some of his most innovative and groundbreaking work. The label has also served as a launching pad for a number of other techno artists and has had a major influence on the development of the genre.

Jeff Mills is known for his innovative use of technology in his music and has often incorporated elements of science fiction and futurism into his work. He has also been involved in numerous multimedia projects including film scores and installations.

A Berlin resident since 2004, Mareena developed her musical career in interaction with the steady advancement of techno and house in Berlin after moving from Rostock / East Germany. As a result of her experiences within the diverse musical channels of Berlin she has developed her own distinct sound. 

This development naturally led to DJ gigs in many notable underground clubs such as About Blank, Berghain, Griessmühle and eventually a residency at Tresor. Her influences range far and wide, including anything from Detroit and Chicago acid to the more hypnotic take on dub, ambient, and techno. 

Throughout the years she has performed extensively both locally and internationally, accomplishing the rare feat of earning a reputation solely as a DJ and curator.

As one of the curators of the New Faces night at Tresor as well as her UNRUSH podcast, interview and event series, she has continuously crafted new conduits for both established and emerging artists to break down musical barriers and transform the world around them. As a DJ she is a chameleon, carefully stitching together immaculate and immersive sound landscapes for any occasion. Whether she is playing peak time, warm up, or after hour, her sound reveals an intelligent eclecticism fused with bold elements of surprise that exemplify her rich knowledge of electronic music culture.

Solid Steel (16th February) Our guest in Hour 1 is Answer Code Request ahead of the release of his new album 'Gens' which is out next week on Ostgut Ton. For the Berghain resident, this is his follow up to his celebrated debut LP 'Code' from 2014 and you can catch him playing tonight at index, Dublin, 17th Feb at Fabric London and the album release party at Berghain on 24th Feb. He told us;
"With this mix I explore opposing musical poles that I gravitate towards as a DJ and producer – but even more so as a listener. Namely, abstract electronic pieces on the one hand and more obviously rhythm-based tracks on the other. I’ve included music classic and new, all of which however shares a certain state of mind, a feeling of distance, restlessness and isolation. The first 40 minutes wander through ambient and experimental music textures, eventually moving toward more club-friendly vistas, broken beats, dubstep, electro and techno, and including the occasional uplifting track. Having long had a soft spot for UK hardcore outgrowths and related club sounds, I also hoped to show with this selection what I see as a broader bass music continuum, one which includes producers outside of the UK. Finally, this mix was recorded at home after several sketches made on the road during my album live tour. It's been a pleasure to compile for a series as pioneering as this one."
