Yuzo Iwata comes to the plate for another episode of ‘Mixed By’. Building from Ambient beginnings, Yuzo shows patience and skill in building his sound over the hour; swimming through his pool of genres past Dancehall, Acid and Trance along the way.

This same skillset is on play across his debut album, Kaizu, which recently dropped on Melbourne's Butter Sessions. Yuzo flexes his sound design muscles across the LP; Balearic textures, broken rhythms and a nod to Japanese video games and eighties fusion, his many influences are expressed with finesse across the full works. For me, Kaizu represents what it really must be like to live inside Yuzo’s head, and what a place it must be!

Empathy is the codeword when it comes to The AM's second solo EP: The 'Sexworker' EP. A short story through music and art, allowing you a moment to walk a mile in another seasoned professional's shoes... Imagine life through her eyes, her thoughts, her feelings, her actions and motivations as her work takes her from flirty fun to a much more severe and fierce role as a vigilante, fighting for justice and retribution for women who've been abused and wronged. As the EP progresses, the further we're plunged into this dark nocturnal world of carnal chaos, deceit and danger.

Sat in a not-so distant neon tomorrow, downtown Detroit, this is the vivid concept and narrative conjured by Detroit native, violinist-turned-techno artist The AM (Ann-Marie Teasley) Sliding into our collections since her debut tracks last year as one half of HLX-1, 2022 has been all about The AM solo releases; in March we had 'Black Majik' on Tresor. Now on Deeptrax 'Sexworker' is another revelation from the agenda-setting artist who's crafted a completely immersive narrative that ranges from the playful electro beats of 'Intercosmic Lap Dance' to the runaway juggernaut 'Black Galaxy' (a collaboration with Scan 7's Track Masta Lou). Each track adding layers of tension and intrigue, cutting through the late night sleaze and exploitation with raw machine soul, 'Sexworker' is steeped in detail... But loaded with enough space for your imagination.

Santiago Salazar aka the Sci-Fi Chicano drops a deep 4 tracker ranging from the deep soulful Techno of "The Queen" onto the warehouse inspired "Mas Violencia" followed by the hands in the air "Rise Up" and finishing things off with the jazzy "Europa". Yaxteq's own DJ Dex found true inspiration in the jazzy chords of "Europa" and flipped it into a dancefloor banger for an homage to the Underground Resistance classic "Jupiter Jazz".

As an audiophile and former Deep House, House and Jazz, Funk and Soul curator; a wide range of music has influenced Thea, transcending genre and country of origin genre.


About the track
Off-kilter is the first offering from Berlin-based Brit and Refuge Worldwide resident Thea. This track keeps the listener glued to the dance floor as they hunt the sound of the wondering synths, whilst keeping up with the pace of the bassline as their mind skips along deciphering the elements of the track.

About the release
Berlin’s Open Music Lab (OML) presents a new compilation of original material from its diverse community of up-and-coming music producers: Diffraction. Drawing from a dazzling range of electronic genres, driven by a spirit of collaboration, Diffraction captures the potential of an artist community looking fearlessly beyond the mainstream.

The name Diffraction — is a scientific term for the way light or sound waves split and scatter, expanding their range—a perfect metaphor for what transpired at the end of OML’s eight-month Production and Artistic Development programme. Each of these creators took on a series of intensive educational workshops, with the aim of developing their own practice and musical identity. Collaboration was the cornerstone of these workshops, be it with other producers, seasoned industry professionals teaching the course, or their fellow students. With an endless array of fresh perspectives available to them, each producer hit a new level of creative vision. The result is this unique and inspired compilation.

On Diffraction, the artists showcase their individuality, channelling their cultural backgrounds, personal identities and lived experience. The tracks move through many moods and soundscapes, reflecting the journeys of their creators. From ambient slow-burners like SALA’s “What Are You Afraid Of”, to Gamelan-infused poetry from Panasiagirl, Thea’s minimal stomper “Ponderance”, Brasilian-inspired club from King Sleepy, and Palestinian techno from YA Z AN, Diffraction culminates with a euphoric drag anthem that's dying to be lip-synced.

Diffraction embodies the core values of OML: creating a tight-knit community of artists who embark on a creative journey together, sharing knowledge and expertise, and uplifting and encouraging each other on the way, ultimately giving back to the scene as a whole.

House of Others #019 | DJ CHIA PUDDING | Strictly 4 The Love

Movements push forward and pull backwards, prograde and retrograde, advance then recede. They begin to look within each progression an enmeshment into one another that the entire flagellation starts to blur and unify into a circular loop. On the latest EP for miv. (short for mémoire involontaire) ‘Wax & Wane’ sees label owner Bézier join forces with their partner Len.Leo who in 2022 made his first appearance on Bézier’s release for Dark Entries ‘Valencia’ as vocalist for the track ‘Reservoir’.

Staying true to their distinct musical stylings, Bézier opens the release with a disco-pop infused tune ‘Terrazza’. Soaring, sweeping synths rip curl from the sea laden on top of a school of bass lines snaring the listener into an emotional, prismatic spray to show us that moods refract in a kaleidoscope way but can still lattice around a delicate balance. ‘Night Bloom’ sees Len.Leo honing a particular sound carving out a world flourishing in the darkness with luminescent glow radiating from hidden bodies that appear at the right moment to light our pathways. Together, Len.Leo and Bèzier close the EP with ‘Wax & Wane’ as they merge impulses to create harmonic ebb and flow building, layering, terracing more landscapes of sound and accelerating bursts of pleasure-inducing euphoria amongst a backdrop of bright, vivid neon signs. 

The end result of what Bézier and Len.Leo achieve here represents a pendulum swinging from concealment to revelation as they continue to showcase to each other and the world their progress as a musical pair in their shared home production studio nestled deep in the heart of Friedrichshain, Berlin. A space that invites constant rotation of ideas and progress sees the two scaffolding more tiers to their combined body of work that at the end will leave lasting impressions on the surface of the concrete walls that envelop them. 

And last but not least, as the fourth connecting dot in a series of cover art to launch miv. back in 2021, the highly esteemed illustrator Benedikt Rugar, who has been featured in New York Times, Brand Eins magazine and a regular design contributor to local events crews like Cocktail d’Amore returns to provide an image fitting for the themes revealed by 'Wax & Wane'.
