This EP is inspired by the cultural heritage which the Argentines and Chileans seek to perpetuate. Ulises has developed cultural and emotional bonds towards the natives, whose struggles he feels and shares. Struggles for their own traditions, their own lands and their own existence. Thanks to the resistance of cultures like the Mapuche we can now enjoy traditional melodies and instruments, such as kultrungs, charangos and quenas, that Ulises skilfully merges with an electronic timber palette to achieve the deep organic sound that we can appreciate in this EP. 
Uña pays homage to the acclaimed quena player Uña Ramos, from the mountainous Jujuy province. Pewünguen derives from a chant in Mapudungun, the Mapuche language, that celebrates the rebirth of nature in spring. Here, the artist adopts the same chant metaphorically, to wish the rebirth of the Mapuches. 
Musician by formation, Ulises plays guitar, keyboard, and drums. Such multi-instrumental skills provide him with a broad range of sounds to blend and wedge into the electronic beat. Talking about the aesthetic he craves, Ulises stated “I want to have the possibility to choose any timber from any source I feel the music needs. No limits!” …and limitless is his desire to explore the vastness of sounds, to experiment new combinations. 
Besides the original tracks, the EP comprises four gems by Carrot Green, Steffen Kirchoff, Arutani, Coss & Iorie, who remixed Ulises’ productions.

The nature of the arts is one of those ancient enigmas which keeps thoughtful minds constantly philosophizing on its power. The mystery of art is deepened by the fact that inspiration can burst at anytime; any sound or fleeting glance can trigger a masterpiece. How can that be explained? We don’t know, and maybe we never will, but what matters to us is tending to that inspiration, and the conditions in which it thrives. This is the story of MA, the latest EP by Batu Ozer, which we are happy to bring to our listeners today. Old recordings of saz or string instruments resembling long-necked lutes, triggered the creative genius of the artist, and five new aural gems were the result.
The title of the album means “water” in ancient Turkish language. Its sonorities and motives evoke the elegance and preciousness of the old Anatolian history. Sounds of spilling water remind us of the fountains found in the courtyards and gardens of gilded palaces. Gentle choirs blend with lutes and finger percussion, effectively transporting us to the public intimacy of the ‘Arfana’: the public musical gatherings of the old times. All of the artist’s productions reflect this ancient beauty, which skillfully revisits and elaborates with electronic effects, resulting in a timeless weave of antiquity and modernity.

Istanbul’a is a song written for the ancient city Istanbul that evokes timeless questions: Can one ever leave behind one’s home? Can one ever truly arrive at a home that was once abandoned yet never quite forgotten? The original version of this haunting track is a dreamy meander through a labyrinth of marimbas and harps, orchestrated delicately by Santi and brought to life by Tuğçe’s ethereal voice. Santi & Tuğçe first released an extended version of this track in 2017 in the aftermath of political events that filled the city with grave uncertainty, much like the current moment in which we find ourselves. Even more so than at the time of its original release, today Istanbul’a captures a widespread sentiment of liminality and uprootedness that echoes all around and gains new meaning in our world as we ask: Can we go back to a past that is long gone? Will things ever be the same again?

Along with Santi & Tuğçe’s revision of their original Istanbul’a, this EP features three brand new renditions. KMLN blends elements of deep tribal house and minimal techno into the original track that is bound to bring the heat to the dancefloor, while Herrhausen & Treindl’s approach yields an equally danceable, yet more laid-back euphoria. The EP ends on a climactic note with Dunkelbunt’s version featuring his signature transglobal electronic-instrumental sound that is full of energy, swing and a sense of eclecticism that is as layered as the ancient city Istanbul itself.

Santi (from Asunción, Paraguay) and Tuğçe (from Istanbul, Turkey) left their homes to follow their dreams of music and have been road companions and musical partners for more than a decade. Currently based in Berlin after many years of living in the US where they first met, they each bring a vibrant mosaic of influences and ideas from all over the world: soulful melodies, colorful instrumentation, dreamy harmonies, and surgically engineered dance-floor beats, informed by years of Santi’s training in music composition and computer science along with Tuğçe’s studies in jazz vocals and creative writing. To this date, they have performed in many major electronic and world music festivals, clubs, theaters, and concert halls throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America and received critical acclaim worldwide (e.g. Oye! on NPR’s “Latin Roots: Best Alternative Songs of 2019”, Songs for my Grandmother among Beehype’s “Best Albums from Turkey” in 2017).
