"True Prayer" is a truly rare and powerful spiri-musical offering. How many other psychedelic folk albums are the product of seven years of deep shamanic initiation, spiritual pilgrimage, and total immersion in ceremonial living? The answer surely is "very few"... but now there is one at least: this LP, the debut album of New York based Alan Scheurman under the moniker Santiparro.

Santiparro means "the lens that sees many things not usually seen." It is a name that was given to Alan Scheurman in 2010 during a pilgrimage with a Wixatari (Huichol) family to Wirikuta - the sacred desert where Peyote originates.

Scheurman grew up in the Detroit indie music scene and moved to Brooklyn following a spiritual awakening in 2007. There, he contributed to the founding of an intentional community and educational center called the Golden Drum under the guidance of shaman and spiritual teacher Maestro Manuel Rufino. Scheurman spent the next seven years centering himself in shamanic rites and initiation making frequent pilgrimages to visit and study with elders in North, Central and South America.

The songs that form "True Prayer" bubbled up after deep dives into the Spirit World, they were gathered from the outer reaches of our ever expanding collective consciousness. And although sojourns into the shamanic realms are intense in nature, the music collected here does not overpower. "True Prayer" is accessible and fertile, sincere and extraordinary pop & folk music – sparkling with the light of Wisdom.

The album is blessed with guest contributions from Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), Adam Wills (Bear In Heaven), Melati Malay (Young Magic) and Ben Bromley (NewVillager). "True Prayer" is an emergent work, ancient teachings and timeless visions, transmitted through the artistry of a modern man.

He has painted the portraits of many super-natural beings but this is the first time his numinous work has graced the cover of a record... and we are so excited!

This is the closing track from my 2008 release "Old Patterns" produced by Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive.  It is one of a few instrumentals and perfect for shavasana in your yoga practice, shamanic journeying, meditation, trance, or just to zone out and get lost in the soundscape.  Hope you enjoy.

With his new album The Talon, intrepid musical traveler Santiparro ventures deep into areas uncharted by his prior catalog, and the results are a surprising, thrilling about-face. The lilting, gentle melodies are still there, as is the psychedelic shimmer which sparkled through his last album True Prayer, but with the help of Kansas City-based producer J. Ashley Miller (Jametatone, Thiefist, Ssion), Santiparro has dropped those key features into wholly new sonic worlds.

The Talon was recorded at The Infoaming Vertex, in Miller's home of Kansas City, MO. This studio houses the board that was used in the making of Michael Jackson's Thriller, and this very same board was used on The Talon. Work on the album took place between the Great American Eclipse and the Super Blue Blood Moon Eclipse.

It is the spirit of collaboration between Miller and Santiparro which is largely responsible for The Talon's expanded sonic palette. The record bursts with insistent beats, massive choruses, and buoyant synths that rest somewhere between '70s krautrock, '80s Peter Gabriel, and modern pop, all new additions to the Santiparro sound. "I laid down all the vocals and guitar, a little bit of bass and synth, but Ashley just ripped through a lot of the other instruments here," Santiparro says of the production process. "I’d beatbox stuff to him, and he’d make it happen."

Where True Prayer featured cameos by well-loved musicians — Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone, and so on — The Talon eschews this approach. Aside from some vocal contributions by Santiparro's wife Indy Genao, the album was a close collaboration between Santiparro and Miller, with each working to help the other play to their strengths.

Some longtime followers of Santiparro's music might be surprised by some of the new sounds, but The Talon draws the listener in with its sonic daring, without losing the spiritual fervor and longing for peace that marks this project's oeuvre. "Some of the tracks definitely took on a new direction and are heavier into Ashley’s production style, like 'Unconditional Smile'," Santiparro admits. "But I wanted to leave my comfort zone and follow through on some bold dares".

Alan Scheurman began making music as Santiparro in 2010 after a Wixarika elder gave him the name on a pilgrimage to collect peyote. Translated as “a lens that sees many things not usually seen” but aware it also signifies “magnifying glass,” Scheurman is certain it was given to indicate he was the gringo with big glasses, not some special seer. His first EP of bedroom recordings, Get Well Soon, on FM Dust, was influenced by his early experiences  in peyote and ayahuasca ceremonies. After its release, Scheurman relocated from Detroit to Brooklyn. In 2015, Gnome Life released Santiparro's self-produced True Prayer LP, featuring contributions by Will Oldham, Kyp Malone, and others. He later moved to Joshua Tree, occasionally touring in intimate settings. Spending 3 months each year in the Peruvian Amazon studying within the Shipibo tradition, he wrote the majority of 2018’s The Talon - exploring new territory with the help of producer J Ashley Miller. That year Scheurman became a father and releasing new music took a back seat, though a few singles would follow. In 2020, he released Shadow Dancer before organizing a series of pandemic fundraising concerts for Amazonians. Later he’d release a cover of Magic Wand by Little Wings for a Gnome Life cassette. In 2023, he put out a cover of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s Squid Eye and returns in 2024 with Everywhere You Ever Were —  a reflection on the work that came out of a decade of study with the Shipibo and feels like a return to form.
