Sanctuary

It was always a preposterous idea to begin with. But then again, dreams don’t come to life without clinging on to a slice of fantasy. Since losing themselves in similarly sizeable collectives such as Arcade Fire and The New Pornographers, these free-spirited musicians sought to replicate one of their own within the scene – doing so in 2012. Spontaneously uniting through friends, family and chance encounters, the Sapporo unit has gone on to establish themselves as one of the most bold and resilient bands in the Singaporean scene, with a grandiose baroque-rock sound that draws elements from indie-rock, new-wave, folk and classical. 

2012 witnessed the beginning of an adventure that was anything but shy. The infant steps of Sapporo Safaris (affectionately referred to as “SaSa”) left lingering pawprints in the hearts of many, showcasing their catchy anthems at venues like Home Club, Blu Jaz Café, Red Dot Museum, *SCAPE, and The Esplanade. Sapporo Safaris were featured on the finale episode of the online video series Kombi Sessions, and on publications throughout the region dedicated to audiences in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. The band was also selected for Noise Singapore’s The Music Mentorship programme in 2013, where they were personally mentored by not one, but three celebrated talents – Saiful Idris (The Great Spy Experiment), Bani Haykal (B-Quartet, The Observatory), and Eddino Abdul Hadi (Force Vomit).
