My very first song.    I wrote it in somewhere between London and Paris in the Chunnel.   It was inspired by the old song A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square- because when I was in the Square- he wasn't there.

From Wikipedia:  The lyrics were written by Edith Piaf and the music by Marguerite Monnot. She first sang this song at the cabaret Versailles in New York on September 14, 1949.  It was written to her lover and the love of her life, the French boxer, Marcel Cerdan. On October 27, 1949 Cerdan was killed in a plane crash on his way from Paris to New York to come see her. She recorded the song on 2 May 1950.

Sarah Lassez is a true child of the world, having lived in France, Canada, Australia and the U.S. by the time she was 14 years old. 

Her gypsy roots were immortalized in her memoir, Psychic Junkie, published by Simon & Schuster, which was featured in People, The NY Times and the Anderson Cooper talk show and Lassez’s likeness is recognizable from the bouquet of cult arthouse films she has starred in such as the beloved character of “Egg” in Gregg Araki’s Nowhere. Her rich narrative can be traced back a century ago to her great-grandparents who were famous French/Polish artists. Louis Marcoussis, her great-grandfather, was a master etcher & cubist painter who taught Miro print making. “I have postcards sent to him from Picasso and Man Ray and invitations from Gertrude Stein.” Lassez mentions. “I spent a lot of my childhood in my great-grandfather’s former art studio in the Villa des Arts in Montmartre.” “I am especially inspired by the music, art and culture of the golden age of Paris in the 1920-30s.”

Lassez moved to the mountains above LA a few years back and began exploring her own music while commuting for a residency at Hollywood’s Piano Bar, performing alongside musical beast Brother Sal as the duo La Belle et La Bête. The performances were influenced by her French roots and the noirish vibes crept into her songwriting which began to exhibit a circus-like quality, sitting somewhere between Tom Waits and Pink Martini. Not only was her songwriting born of that distinct period, but she is descended from the artistic royalty of that scene and has inherited both the talent and oscillating emotions of her forebearers. “My grandfather Jacques Besse was a talented musician and composer who composed a couple songs for Edith Piaf before he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted into a famous asylum in the Loire Valley in France where he spent the rest of his life.”

After cultivating a collection of original songs on her ukulele, Lassez entered the studio with producer/engineer Doug Grean to lay them down earlier this year for her debut EP Paris in Tears. The motto for the city of Paris is “Fluctuat nec mergitur”, which translates to “Tossed by the waves, but never sunk” – a motto that Sarah has adopted for herself. “I’ve experienced a lot of loss in the past years” Lassez reflects. “Paris in Tears is about perseverance, walking through pain and the dark beauty of melancholia.”
