Void Lull Sleep Music For Babies

Dominic Maurice's latest piano EP "Piano Horizons" is a masterful journey through the depths of human emotion, captured with grace and subtlety across four evocative tracks. Each piece is a delicate exploration of beauty, tranquility, and reflection, creating an immersive experience for listeners.

From the opening notes, Maurice draws us into a space where time seems to slow down. The melodies are soft yet powerful, weaving between delicate arpeggios and moments of quiet intensity. The first track invites introspection, its gentle progression offering a sense of calm that gradually deepens, preparing the heart for the emotional voyage ahead.

As the EP unfolds, the second track introduces a bittersweet yearning, its flowing chords pulling at the heartstrings. It carries a certain vulnerability, a soft ache that reminds us of the complexity of emotions we often carry quietly within us. The tender harmonies evoke feelings of nostalgia, yet they are imbued with an unspoken hope, leaving the listener suspended in a beautiful, fleeting moment.

寬恕 (Forgiveness)

THE RELUCTANT CARNIE is a quirky, vintage-style miniature for solo piano, originally composed in 2017 to accompany various selections of background music for use in a bingo game app. Pianist Randall Hodgkinson has said that the work “is charming, a little Satie sensibility set in the wild west.” While perhaps simple and straightforward in scope, The Reluctant Carnie nevertheless maintains an evocative charm with its sad swagger and temperamental moodiness.

This unaccompanied solo for viola offers the daring artist a “fever pitch” of drama, melody, and virtuosity! For approximately six minutes, the violist is set free to explore a mystifying world of Dream and Thought, flitting between the sounds of Celtic melancholy, J.S. Bach, and George Gershwin with simply their imagination and instincts to guide them.

Crystallization (Piano Solo)

Composed in 2023 for soprano Claire Fedoruk, “Living the Aftermath” is a song cycle that takes the listener through the human cycle of emotions that follow tragedy: grief, loss, heartache, denial, acceptance, meditation, peace...

The gentle lilt of meter that frameworks this charming poem seems to lend itself to the cyclic nature of life and human experiences. We continue to travel forward: “Round and round the little way, Up and down the little hill.” Dorothy Parker speaks of finding love again below “renovated skies”, of continuing to write our story over the paling ink of old lies. We never know for certain what lies ahead of us on this road, whether we shall love more or less, be a little better or a little worse. But we can be assured that “Where, unwilling, dies the rose, Buds the new, another year.”

The emotions and reactions embodied herein are: thoughtful, acceptance, resolute, grave, free, wistful, faith, cyclical.

Composed in 2023 for soprano Claire Fedoruk, “Living the Aftermath” is a song cycle that takes the listener through the human cycle of emotions that follow tragedy: grief, loss, heartache, denial, acceptance, meditation, peace...

By observing Nature and the gentle changing of the seasons, we gain perspective. We see the leaves grow dark and heavy, until they fall to the ground and paint the streets with gold. Even during times of great distress, Nature reminds us that even the lashing of the wind and rain in Spring will not fell a mighty tree. And with this knowledge, we are able to “take meaning from all turmoil” and find some peace—“a serenity that knows no pain.”

The emotions and reactions embodied herein are: meditative, vibrant, emphatic, intense, realization, understanding, sweetness, gentleness, peace, and trust.

In the aftermath of tragedy, our hearts shake with anger as we fiercely resist this cruel fate. We find ourselves refusing to accept the harsh reality of what has befallen us and our loved ones. In the end, while we may be forced to acknowledge the truth of the matter, for a time we may only acknowledge it with bitterness.

The emotions and reactions embodied herein are: reckless, bitter, somber, mournful, fierce, woeful, hesitant, angry, wistful, resentful, pain, and regret.

Living the Aftermath - I. I Am Not Resigned

Recorded at One on One Recording Studio in North Hollywood, by the Instrumental Casting Orchestra, with Ruslan Biryukov (cello soloist) and Dustin McKinney (trumpet soloist).

Certain musical patterns are shared among all of humanity, transcending geographical and temporal boundaries. This selection of early spiritual songs originating from the North American continent exemplifies this remarkable unity. Whether it be the music of indigenous peoples displaced by European colonists, the religious songs adapted from folk songs of European origins, the poignant spirituals of the enslaved forcibly brought to America’s shores, or the hymns sung by impoverished rural Southerners, humanity expresses hope through their shared language of music.
This orchestral suite opens with a rendition of a Lakota lullaby titled, “Čhaŋté Wašté Hokšíla (My Kind-Hearted Boy)”. This then transitions into a New England colonial rendition of the traditional song “Wayfaring Stranger”. The song’s sentiment of constant journeying, being a stranger in a strange land yet lifting the eyes in hope toward the promise of a better home, links the stories of all who reside on this continent: European immigrants fleeing oppression, indigenous communities forced upon trails of tears, and African people enslaved against their will.
From this wayfaring song that links them all, a lone trumpet introduces the melody, “I Wade the Water to My Knees”, a traditional ring shout song that recalls the historic 1803 rebellion and subsequent mass suicide at Dunbar Creek on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The lyrics of this call-and-response shout song bring this powerful imagery to life:

I wade the water to my knees.
I’m gonna pray, gonna pray.
I wade the water to my knees.
I’m gonna pray til I die.

Lord, the water’s so cold…
Til my body but not my soul…
I’m gonna sink and never rise…
Won’t rise now but don’t know when…
With my faith I’ll rise again…

Following a brief harmonic transition, a faithful orchestration of “Wondrous Love” is presented. The harmonies are accurately reproduced from those found in the Sacred Harp tunebook of 1844. This distinctly American tradition of harmony and singing-style originated in New England during the late 18th century and was subsequently codified in the aforementioned tunebook, published in the American South.
After this rugged rendition of “Wondrous Love” comes “Idumea”. The melody was initially composed by Ananias Davisson in 1816. Subsequently, it was paired with Methodist lyrics (authored by Charles Wesley in 1753) and included in the shape-note hymnal Southern Harmony in 1835. The hymn was further incorporated into the Sacred Harp collection in 1844.
At long last, our journey culminates in a seamless fusion of the melodies from “Idumea” and the Lakota Lullaby that began this musical narrative — once more, illustrating the striking commonalities shared in the music of our diverse heritages.

Spiritual Songs of the New World (Studio Recording)

“The Old Music Box” is among Sarah’s earliest pieces, composed in 2001. Though not having grown up with a piano in the home, when Sarah was younger she would steal away while on visits to her grandparents’ into the “music room” to invent melodies on her grandmother’s hundred-year-old, upright piano. This tune was a favorite miniature that she would play every chance she got. The recording of this work, found on the 2013 album “A Personal Echo,” is performed by Wallin Huff on the very same, cherished old piano.

Sarah Wallin Huff has enjoyed her work as a composer for concert halls and soundtracks since 1993. Her original compositions have been performed throughout the States and abroad, including the Exeter Phoenix Auditorium in Devon, England; the Mosman Art Gallery in Sydney, Australia; the Zipper Hall in Los Angeles; and the National Opera Center in New York City. As a violinist, violist, and 6-string electric violinist, she has extensive experience playing with diverse ensembles, as well as performing on various recording projects, large and small.
