Notes on the piece:
"Ceaseless" is a piece that took me a while to get started. I don't consider myself too much of a lyric writer, so when I was asked to compose a piece for the choir, I was excited yet full of trepidation. I had little ideas that I would jot down every once in a while, but nothing really stuck as a unified piece. Then one night, while incessantly brainstorming, the words for the piece finally came to me in a rapid blur. Once the words were settled, I immediately began composing the music. It felt strange to just allow the words to fully dictate how and where the piece was going. I'm more of an instrumental composer, so venturing into choral repertoire for me is like an adventure in timbres. The piece needed to showcase movement and line, so I ran with that idea and gave each part something that ebbs and flows, including a section where the line is interpreted freely by each individual singer (also known as aleatoric music). "Ceaseless" is a piece sung from the point of view of someone in existential transition: unsure of where they are going or where they will end up. However, the words become a brief solace and serve as a reminder that, no matter what, their love will never cease.

November 30 is Remembrance Day for Lost Species. in 2017, some songwriters and I got together and put on a showcase in which each songwriter contributed a song about a lost or extinct species. Honshu Wolf was my song, now finally recorded for your listening pleasure!

The Honshu Wolf, also known as Japanese Wolf has an interesting and sad story. The wolf dwelt in the mountains of Japan, which were seen by locals as dangerous. The people at the time associated the wolf with the mountains, and it was thought to be their protector and guardian. In Japanese folklore, there is the widely recorded belief of the okuriōkami ("escort wolf") that followed someone walking alone through a forest at night until they reach their home without doing them any harm. Wolf fangs, hide, and hair were carried by travelers to ward of evil spirits, and wolf skulls were kept in some home shrines to ward off misfortune.

Over time, deforestation became a problem, minimizing wolf habitats, and forcing them into conflict with humans. Honshu wolves were preying on livestock, and when rabies broke out among the wolf population, people began to hunt the wolf en masse. Killing wolves became a national policy under the Meiji Restoration, and within one generation the Japanese wolf was extinct.
