The month of October is a very windy time in Northwest Washington. During one of the gusty rainstorms of 2013 my neighborhood lost power. This is not uncommon, and so I have tall glass container candles all over the house. I lit them all, filled my little house with dim light but couldn't sleep. Something about the candles on the top of my piano, the way they flickered with the staccato rain against window and the high sounds of wind made me write this piece. Candlelight is currently being used in a documentary by Make It Rain Media, release date TBD. Thank you for listening

Candlelight by Sarah Goodin

Carry and Keep is a piece I wrote, sad and a upset about an argument with a friend. In our most important relationships, we are safe -- to love, to be ourselves, yes, but also to communicate unpleasantries, to argue, to fight. In these safe places, we say and do things, reacting from frustration and fear, from new difficulties and from old wounds that play out in our lives again and again. Carry And Keep

I love this piece so much -- probably because it reminds me so much of so many other artists and their much greater works. This is definitely an homage piece, both to the romantic  and cinematic waltzes of Yann Tierson and to the poetic rhythms of Theodore Roethke. This waltz, so tipsy in timing and feel, is a lone older gentleman, an empty bottle, a dance in a cold room. He's slowly recalling, remembering a younger, more triumphant time when he wasn't dancing alone...and then he falls. Havahart

When I was approached to write instrumental music for the Good Time Girls documentary, this is the first piano piece I wrote just for them. I wanted something sassy -- both for the content of the film and for its characters. This piece, Good Time Girl, is for the two protagonists of the documentary, Marissa McGrath and Sara Holodnick, two historians telling the real-life (her)story of an old west town built with money from prostitution, and for the sex workers and madams who built many a city with their hard-earned tax dollars. Preach on, ladies!

Good Time Girl

Piano is still hard for me -- I've been playing regularly for about five years, but I'm still not that great. I get so frustrated sometimes, wishing I could play the things I hear in my mind. With this piece, I remember I was trying to figure out B major, the key on my lovely old and out of tune piano with all the sweetest bell tones. I started slow, warming up my fingers and brain, and began to add one layer of movement over another. After a few minutes, I did it again. And again. I couldn't think of a title, so I called this piece the first thing that came out of my mouth after I was done. This is "Pretty" in B major.

I chose this selection from a longer piece of mine to be the primary theme for one of The Good Time Girls' main characters, Sara Holodnick. More than anything I wanted Sara's great depth of feeling reflected in this piece. This is another of my favorite recordings, and I hope you enjoy it as well! Sara's Song

I almost never shared this song. Every tiny little scrap of possible music I would immediately email the director of the film, saying "this? like this? more or less creepy?" But this piece I hid away, embarrassed at how...sweet it was. How slow and sweet it is. When I did share it, he loved it, lauded it as chest-cracking. I hope that is true. For me, it is chest-cracking, salty-tear inducing capital-R Romance. Which is why I almost never shared it. Don't tell anyone. I like Romance.

Marissa's Song

I used to walk home from the train station in the winter I lived in Arlington -- a small town at the end of the Redline, just outside Boston. Every walk home from the T was so cold, so cold; it hurt my lungs to breathe, to expose any tiny part of my face, but the nights were immaculate. Clear. Bright. There was never any other time of the year I could see the sky so razor sharp and shiny. That sky, the memory of it, inspired this piece.
