Whereas the Goddess Kāli ... is a dragged out aa sound like Kaali or Kāli - its root is from Kala or Time because she has the ability to bend, stretch or speed up time.

One of the many attributes She is called upon now is so She can speed up the removal of the virus... She has the  Power to deal with fear, negativity, insurmountable problems and difficulties in all their forms. 

Maha Kali is also the Goddess of Epidemics.  It is Her great Compassion & Power that is being called upon now.
