Talk to any veteran artist and they'll tell you consistency is the secret to longevity. Staying relevant in a competitive industry requires unwavering dedication to the craft—a lesson that nobody knows better than the godmother of house music, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale. The gear head, educator, music nerd and Detroit legend is considered the Motor City's first woman DJ to play underground house music. Her inquisitive mind, passion for audio equipment and community spirit has led to a decades-spanning career that has inspired countless women and expanded Detroit's rich musical heritage. 

As a teenager, she learned to record on reel-to-reel tapes before learning the ropes from club king Ken Collier in the late '70s. Mastering the art of what she called "sneak-a-mixx"—seamlessly mixing vinyl records continuously—she beat over 600 artists to win the 1985 Motor City Mix competition. DJing remained a given in her life, even when she pursued a full-time engineering degree. She's often described in interviews how she would do math homework in between mixing tracks during gigs in her 20s. When she's not behind the decks or playing in the live ensemble Nyumba Muziki, she teaches DJing and production classes with the goal of teaching her students self-expression.

Hale's sound is warm and dynamic, incorporating everything from gospel, electro, hip-hop, techno and live instruments with the goal of spreading positivity and happiness. Those feelings and cross-genre moods are all tangible on her RA Podcast. Moving gracefully between disco, funky techno, R&B and classic house, Hale's mix feels like the perfect night out, showcasing her versatility, love for vibrant rhythms and her sharp ear.

Welcome to a One Hour Open-Access Online Session which opens a Ceremonial Space held in sound, guiding us into Depth and through Earth Chakra, with the intention of rememberment during times of dismemberment.

This is a sound session is focused for Bodies of Proximity, first and foremost bodies with lineages who have been silenced, erased and bodies who are currently bearing the brunt of the trauma, neglect, violence, genocide.

We recognise all bodies who stand at the growth edge of our collective; especially those who are disallowed appropriate space and time to grieve; in terms of us facing, recognising and clearing out the Spiritual Intrusions of the Colonial, Capitalist, Separation War-Machine who sneaks through unconscious greed, and biased, exclusionary conditioning.

Bodies of Proximity is an inclusive term, self elected.
It is constellating of multiplicities, queerness and centralising brownness, blackness.
Proximity favours The Darkness, leans towards it. 
We are born from Proximity, as we are born from Darkness.

as little rainbow frogspawn in a big grey pond, we grow into curious tadpoles and leave the NEST to become fabulous, fierce, stunting froggies, walking the runway that is life 💚

Was a super special party, with a lot of friends around. 
Thanks for having me!

The mix begins with raw, urban, and percussive energy, with 90s guettotech and bass, transitioning to classic house with vocals, pianos, and danceable grooves, where I wanted to hook the dancer. From there, I had a desire to delve into more experimental and abstract territory, without losing sight of house music as a feeling. From the middle to the end, the energetic and euphoric vibe returned, ending with a mix of uplifting vocals, Latin grooves, and remixes with a lot of history to bring a smile to the dancefloor.

Beyond the nu skool and the old skool there is the real skool, that is to keep the classic energy alive while updating its sound with very contemporary tracks, and there is where this mix aims to get.

This month's conversation is with artist and healer Sārāh Mārtinus. Sārāh Mārtinus (she/they) is a research-informed artist and ancestral lineage healer. Her work focuses on relational kinship & contradiction (non dual, ritual) practice, decentralizing, deconditioning, and decolonizing through process-led co-emergence and intrapsychic ecologies. She writes, paints, and creates sound through centralising darkness, transformation, and intersectional shadow integrations, her multi-media practice operating as a form of processual meaning-making - locating wound within cultures of disappearances.

As descendant of both migrating Sri Lankan diaspora and Irish settling colonies, Sarah came into being on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri People of Woiwurrung language group, in Kulin Nation; the Traditional Custodians of Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Her lineages weave through South Asia & Europe, outwards/inwards, reconciling in rivers of reparation, remembrance

Her work is currently published through 'unbecomings', Zilberman Gallery, Berlin (October, 2025), curated by Misal Adnan Yildiz after their constellating of performance dialogues ‘When one of us remembers who we really are, all of us remember’ at Pickle Bar, Berlin (June, 2025).

Sārāh offers one on one sessions and community ceremony, with ritual and witness counsel for power rebalance.

How exactly do we define our work and how does that work entangle and circumscribe our sexual identities, our racialized bodies, our creative lives and the ways in which we provide care? How do we perform both tasks and identities within the framework of that which we consider work? These conversations are a means to speak between intersectionalities by anchoring through our (always, already, and ever pervasive) sexualized and racialized bodies, our working bodies, our artistic bodies and our performative bodies. I hope that they contribute to dialogues which normalize sex work as work, and all work as deserving of respect, healthy conditions, and a living wage.

Mad Kate (they/them) is an electronic producer, sound designer, performance artist and writer who began working the Berlin performance and club scene in 2004, expanding their unique identity-queering, genderfcking and sexpositive performative work throughout music, theatre and film. Their explorations of borders between/within bodies, audibility, consent, proximity, and touch as political practice have brought them to theaters, communes, technomansions, prisons, dungeons, squats and galleries around the world.

S4E9 S.W.E.A.T. with Sārāh Mārtinus

My guest this month is transdisciplinary artist Isaiah Lopaz, whose work revolves around collage, photography, text, and performance. Born in occupied Tongvaland to a working class African American family, Lopaz is a descendent of Igbo / West African / Geechee / African American / First Nations peoples. His work frequently focuses on tracing where histories often framed as disparate and distinct, overlap and converge. The past, sacred stories and practices, genealogy, and personal mythologies are merged in Lopaz’ practice to underscore intersections of time and space.

Artistic research that engages African, Creole, and First Nations epistemologies, cosmologies, and methodologies are essential to his work. Lopaz’ research has been supported through stipends, fellowships, scholarships, and residencies from institutions including: The Berlin Senat for Culture and Europe, the documenta Institut, Stiftung Kunstfonds, Theater Rotterdam, the University of Bayreuth, Flutgraben, Ebenböck Haus, and Zucker Erben. Lopaz has exhibted and performed at events and institutions including the 10th Berlin Biennale, the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, the Neues Museum, Kunstverein Hamburg, The HAU, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Beursschouwburg, and the 7th Afroeuropean Biennale. His work has been featured in the New York Times, CNN, Huffington Post, Der Speigel, and ZDF. In the spring of 2024, Lopaz founded Black Visual Grammar, a mobile archive which engages Black perspectives on an array of themes and subjects through collage workshops which coincide with public exhibitions.
