I love to watch you after supper,
Watch you standing in your garden 
Watching from my window by the door.
You pick white lilies and clutch them to your chest to keep them safe,
Their fragrant petals crumpled in your clenched and trembling fist. 
I hope that you will be okay someday. 

I cannot pretend to truly know you.
I have only glimpses of the life you lead,
Stolen from my window by the door.
Every evening you come out here, the same old flowers in fist,
And you seem to be saying a prayer— 
“I hope that I will be okay someday"—

Lifting your head slowly to the heavens.
And there is joy to be found in this motion,
And there is solace to be found in the color of the evening sky in May.
And though the sun may set,
There is light to be found yet
If you’d just look a little harder.

I can only imagine what you have been through,
Your world is a battleground.
Your garden is a fortress.

Keeping watch from the window by the door.
