Last night, an appreciated DJ colleague and long-time companion of mine passed away, so I’d like to dedicate this week’s post in loving memory of him. Heiko Schäfer (aka Heiko M/S/O) belonged to the first generation of Frankfurt electronic music activists. The first things that come to mind when remembering him, are his mischievous and big laughter and his Tintin-like haircut. I met him for the first time in 1990, when he was the dealer of my favourite record shop, Boy Records. Through the 90s, and for the most part of the Noughties, Heiko remained one of the main movers and shakers of the Frankfurt music scene. Together with his partner, Ata Macias, he was responsible for some of the most influencing German labels of all time. It all started with the label Ongaku Musik, in 1992, followed by two other sub-labels, which later gained far more attention than the first one: Klang Elektronik and Playhouse. These labels became the homes of artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Alter Ego, Isoleé, Roman Flügel, LoSoul, among many others. All these artists not only grew with the labels but the labels also grew with them. It was never Heiko’s thing to try and push his own career as a DJ and producer to the max, like most of the others around him had been doing. Instead, he preferred to stay away from the spotlight and dedicated a large part of his life to foster the music of others and pull strings behind the scenes of the music biz. I still recall buying and playing „Our Music,“ one of his first own productions, that was a collaboration with his longterm production partner Pascal F.E.O.S. and was released on Ongaku in 1995. Heiko’s humble personality, his passionate love for music and his tasteful DJing, will never be forgotten by the people who knew him. Today, the electronic music scene is grieving one of its most bustling activists.
