The first-ever free SASSAS concert event, Tonalism is a dusk-to-dawn collaboration with dublab featuring performances by Albert Ortega, Steve Roden, Unrecognizable Now and White Rainbow, video by Jessica Bronson, Cal Crawford, Carole Kim and Matt Sheridan and dublab soundsystem DJs Frosty, Carlos Nino, Hoseh, Jimmy Tamborello, Sam Cooper, Katie Byron, Ale and Part Time Punks DJ Michael Stock. Tonalism takes place in the historic Looff Hippodrome carousel building on the Santa Monica Pier as a part of the GLOW festival sponsored by the City of Santa Monica.

Composer and lutist Jozef van Wissem first attracted attention by deconstructing Renaissance lute music. He has since applied retrograde, palindrome and Burroughs' cut up techniques to further abstract the canon as he builds "a time bridge which links the 17th and 21st centuries".

Dubbed the “Anton Webern of the electronica underground” by The Wire, San Francisco sound collagist Aero Mic'd fuses turntable aesthetics and musique concrete with the studio tradition of ambient music. The result is petite yet dense "noisette miniatures" which captivate and intrigue.

SASSAS proudly presents sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: Yoshi Wada and Tashi Wada, a free public concert featuring new work by acclaimed composer and Fluxus artist Yoshi Wada, and his son, composer Tashi Wada. Commissioned by SASSAS, and performed with the entire Los Angeles basin as a backdrop, the concert offers an exciting aural re-­imagining of this iconic and historically complex hilltop.

Renowned composer, instrument builder, and Fluxus artist Yoshi Wada makes a long overdue appearance in Southern California with his son, composer Tashi Wada. Together, they lead an expansive quintet using a loose structure and a unique mixture of acoustic and electronic instruments that includes: sirens, alarm bells, audio generators, bagpipe and reed organ. Local performers John Allan and Megan Kenney, on bagpipe, and Corey Fogel ,on percussion, join them. In Yoshi Wada’s own words: “I search for deep and ringing sound that travels deep into my cells. Where does this sound exist?”    

The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is unique in the greater Los Angeles area and California State Park system. A historically complex site, the Overlook offers 360 degree views of the Los Angeles Basin as it resides at the juncture of industry and parkland / preserve. Adjacent to the location of the 1963 Baldwin Hills Dam break and just north of an active oil field, the park was the site of a decade long development battle which was successful in fending off a 230-home development, but failed to stop the flat topping of the hill. Parts of the park have been regraded and,  “in certain ways the land still looks as though it’s recovering from the earlier violence.” (Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles Times).

This concert is made possible in part by a Culver City Performing Arts Grant with support from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

SASSAS proudly presents sound. at the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: Bobb Bruno, Dan Clucas, and Simone Forti, a FREE public concert featuring guitarist Bobb Bruno, trumpeter Dan Clucas, and choreographer Simone Forti, a free public concert featuring new works by experimental guitarist Bobb Bruno and trumpeter Dan Clucas, as well as a performance of a seminal work by Simone Forti. Commissioned by SASSAS, and performed with the entire Los Angeles basin as a backdrop, the concert offers an exciting aural re-­imagining of this iconic and historically complex hilltop.

The commissioned artists are presenting works spanning the terrain of the Overlook. Dan Clucas kicks off the afternoon at the northeastern amphitheater and will be joined by Carlos Alvidrez, Brian Christopherson, Jeremy Keller, Eric Sbar, Andy Sykora, and Kris Tiner  in roaming improvisations across the hillside. Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Bobb Bruno, widely known as half of the alternative pop duo Best Coast, follows at the open air pavilion near the Visitor Center. Renowned choreographer Simone Forti concludes the afternoon with Huddle (1961) as interpreted by volunteer performers from the MOCA Teen Program along the Skyline Terrace at the Overlook summit.

SASSAS and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture are proud to once again present sound. at the Schindler House: Charles Curtis, featuring the internationally renowned cellist. Hailed by ArtForum as “one of the great cellists … spellbinding and minimal,” Curtis will perform the Los Angeles premiere of a new work by Tashi Wada, plus music by 18th century composer J.S. Bach, 14th century composers Guillaume de Machaut and Sylvestro di Ganassi, and 20th century composer Luigi Dallapiccola.

The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound (SASSAS) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that serves as a catalyst for the creation, presentation and recognition of experimental art and sound practices in the Greater Los Angeles area. Inspired by the resonance that occurs when experimental music is combined with unconventional performance environments, SASSAS seeks to foster new collaborations and improvisation to spark further exploration in the field.
