SERA021: Satellite Era presents “Xtilde EP,” an accumulation of ethereal music by Sol Rosenthal, best known as Iris Ipsum. 

Broadcasting from somewhere deep in the noisy liveliness of Los Angeles, one may not expect to hear experimental electronic music met with lush, tranquil tones. The urban world feels confined to a snow globe at times, making it difficult to welcome foreign influences into its uniformity. It takes a more calculated approach to break these boundaries - thankfully we have recruited a rising star to help us persist.

At quite a young age compared to the sonic pioneers that move us, Iris Ipsum has already made a clear statement in our biosphere: they are bunkering down for the long run. Juggling music, visual art, and software design, they ensure to blend together and implement all of their crafts with each project. On the audio side, they are inspired by early electronic subgenres such as ambient, electronica, breakbeat, and everything in between. This curiosity led to their debut album “Pattern Language” landing on the esteemed Touched Music imprint last year. Sharing a platform with innovators such as Autechre, The Future Sound of London, and Plaid is an incredible feat, but their follow-up to the release flexes the potential for even more promising times ahead.

Since its conception, “Xtilde EP” was influenced by Iris Ipsum’s devotion to expanding in multiple mediums. Their visuals normally embody sculptures as a focal point, which also serves as a catalytic aspect of their sound practices. Utilizing field recordings and deep listening amidst the franticness of urban environments lays the foundation of their work; spending time in the California mountains and deserts capture the essence of what makes it unique. Tying two tangible realms together is their passion for creative coding - most of this project was produced using self-made Max for Live instruments and VST plugins.

“Xtilde EP” was continually written, building on a collective idea and meant to be enjoyed from start to finish. Though cohesive by nature, Iris Ipsum also allows the project to encapsulate different moods, rather than staying on a singular path. The EP begins on a high note with “Subspace,” an energetic jungle track that nicely fits bouncing drum breaks with a dazzling ambiance. “Loreti” slows the tempo down, introducing a change of pace for the rest of the project. From here, we are met by a clever contrast between pristine drum work that feels heavy yet clean, along with uplifting melodies and tonal vocal chops. This can be heard in “Voxi” and “Essa” with clear nods to trip-hop and electronica. The EP closes with its title track, slightly bringing the pace back up and adding more glitched-out sounds to the structure left by its predecessors.

A collective effort on all fronts, “Xtilde EP” is simply Iris Ipsum at their finest. Reminiscent of early 2000s video game soundtracks, the project brings worldbuilding to life in audible form. Having studied decades of fabled electronic music, we have no doubts that they will become a household name when discussing contemporary experimental artists for years to come.

Hot on the heels of nosync’s ‘Soundsystem Music’, Plasma Sources is proud to present @betonbrutt ‘Project Researcher’, a 4-track offering of no nonsense, dancefloor-ready electronics which take influence from experimental club music, grime and musique concrète.

Having previously released standout EPs on CYTE Records, Beton Brut has built a reputation for delivering distinctively sparse and heavy-hitting productions which have garnered support from the likes of Mumdance, LCY and Walton. On ‘Project Researcher’, Beton Brut takes his sound and develops it even further.

In the producer’s own words, the EP is “about materials - raw, straight and to the point”. This approach is evident from the opening track ‘Tom Machine’, as ASMR-inducing squelches are bottled inside an environment which bubbles with molecular detail, and pitted against clinically arranged percussion sequences.

Up next, ’Lighter’ pulses with Beton Brut’s signature blend of grime-influenced bass-weight and snatches of pirate-radio MC chatter. ‘EMCA’ doubles down on this approach, with a more identifiable rhythm sure to keep heads bouncing at peak time.

‘LSTS’ rounds things off with an approach to bass programming which feels like listening to a biological entity undergoing a process of evolution and regression. The palette feels viscous and shifting here, with abstracted percussion and gunshots populating this sparse environment.

As an EP, ‘Project Researcher’ feels like the auditory equivalent of observing a chemical process inside a petri-dish. Beton Brut sets himself up as a scientist on this release, meticulously collecting individual samples from the deep corners of YouTube, introducing these into abstracted environments and observing the reaction.

After six months of hibernation, our Satellite Trax sublabel has reawakened to freshen up the club circuit with brand new cuts. This time, we are bringing it back home to highlight one of Chicago’s latest up-and-comers.

As an advocate for Chicago’s diverse and impactful contributions to the expansive music sphere, CURSXR sees himself as a flourishing product of his own environment. From house to jazz, hip-hop to footwork, and everything in between - the support that local artists share for our city’s roots run deep. In this case, his passion for footwork culture has motivated him to explore the enriched subgenre. With an upbeat release via Joog Music from last year that recently caught our attention, he is now set to make his debut on home turf.

Landing somewhere in between moody jungle and textbook footwork, “Vanish Mode EP” is a testament to how the two prolific subgenres coincide. Each track blends lush atmosphere and breaks found in jungle with heavy low-end and playful song structures heard in footwork. The project begins with “Dark Dream,” catapulting the listener into an ethereal realm of breakbeats. “Box-Shaped Heart” is an ode to the style of footwork that we have grown to love: vocal chops and prominent drums pasted over a soulful ambiance. “Space Traffic” takes the EP further left field, bringing in a memorable four-on-the-floor section. The final track “You A Custy” is made for dancefloor battles and will surely land with the footwork connoisseurs cutting it up in a dark room.

With salutes to the fabled Chicago footwork movement, along with a niche yet welcoming local jungle and drum ‘n’ bass community, “Vanish Mode EP” is CURSXR’s promising contribution to our city’s music DNA. We are very thrilled to showcase the newest homegrown talent joining our blossoming collective.

The next offering from our in-demand Satellite Trax sublabel brings us just north of our HQ in Madison as we finally connect with an electrifying club music maker. When it comes to the Midwest, you really do not have to travel far to find a hardworking artist that is deserving of the spotlight.

Our first encounter with Sam Link and his growing collection of dancefloor sonics came in 2022 while digitally crate digging on Bandcamp. We were astonished to learn that these tracks were not coming from an unknown bedroom producer in the UK, but rather from an emerging talent out of the great state of Wisconsin. His work then made it to our friends at YUKU, a prolific label pushing forward-thinking art out of Prague. The familiarity in his sound implies that he is a student of formative club music from across the pond, yet his take on it feels more than just a nostalgic recreation.

Sam Link’s obsession with late-90s jungle and drum ‘n’ bass makes his productions feel like a balanced blend of rustic influences with modern, high-fidelity characteristics. This can be heard throughout “Stone Wheel EP,” his latest contribution to the global market of dancefloor weaponry. The project wastes no time in raising the energy with its title track - groovy percussive elements are layered over its heavy bassline, serving as a proper introduction. Already a favorite of our DJ allies that are giving it early playtime, “Mae” is a dark twist to the EP with its rattling low-end and off-kilter structure. “Dusk Pan” is a showcase of jungle down to its simplest form, where its breakbeats are allowed to shine and the sample selection can be flaunted. “Hellp” explores a jazzy side of the project, while still being held together by grueling bass and shuffling percussion. To demonstrate his passion for our music history, Sam Link recruited one of Chicago’s most prominent figures in its niche drum ‘n’ bass community. Stunna takes on remix duties for “Hellp,” turning up the tempo and fusing an old-school DnB style with soulful traits that leave it on an uplifting note.

Disclaimer: “Stone Wheel EP” contains serious bass weight. As some of Sam Link’s best work yet, the project solidifies that he is more than just an underground up-and-comer. He is ready to elevate his status from a renowned local DJ, to a household name in the dance music sphere. With each of his new releases freshening up the club circuit, we have no doubt that the growth in audience will happen soon enough.
