"Ferry Cross the Mersey" is a song written by Gerry Marsden. It was first recorded by his band Gerry and the Pacemakers and released in late 1964 in the UK and in 1965 in the United States. It was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number six in the United States  and number eight in the UK.

"Mersey" refers to the River Mersey in northwest England, which flows into the Irish Sea at Liverpool.

"Côte à Côte, Pour Toujours" (Side by Side, Always) 
This was written is to evoke the essence of a friendship that withstands the test of time. The phrase "Côte à Côte" literally means "Side by Side," suggesting a closeness that feels unbreakable, as though the friends are walking through life together, shoulder to shoulder. Adding "Pour Toujours" (For Always or Forever) gives it a sense of permanence, reinforcing the idea that their bond isn’t just a phase but something enduring.

This is fitting for a piece of music that reflects shared experiences, both good and bad, where the friends stand by each other through every high and low. The imagery of standing or walking "Côte à Côte" (Side by Side) brings to mind the reliability and loyalty of true friendship.
