Killekill welcomes a new duo on board. Skew and Satirist are not newcomers. Nor are they a well-guarded techno secret. But for this initial outing they want the music to come first. Both artists have a background in sonic and technological innovation and have started this project for their left-of-centre techno manoeuvres. Berlin's Killekill is the natural launching-pad. The EP visits IDM-dipped dark techno, a track built around a malfunctioning feedback matrix and a wide-angle, subtly melodic adventure.

KILLEKILL 021 | SKEW & SATIRIST - THROUGH THE COMPOUND EYE EP (snippets)

Sometimes I turn up to a gig for my 6am slot, and the room is pitch black, deafening, and sweat is dripping off the roof, and I think, hmm, what should I play?

A lot of my solo tracks aren't quite right for this sort of atmosphere, so I've been working on a new project designed more for dark sweaty holes in which we like to spend our weekends.

It's a collaboration with someone I have been working with for many years, who is releasing under the new name - Satirist. The first vinyl + digital release coming next week on Berlin's Killekill label. No pretty melodies this time. The name I will be releasing this work under is - SKEW (because it's a bit off).

Skew & Satirist - Morphogenesis

When I recorded the first piece of my "Whatever" series (the songs have no name, so you can call them whatever you like), I had just moved into my new Berlin apartment with my beloved Yamaha Piano. I had been traveling for a long time and after listening to a lot of modern classical music on the road, I felt the desire to make music myself.

Inspired by Artists like Greg Haines, I tried to combine my acoustic instrument with electronic elements. So I set up a USB microphone, recorded a few notes into my iPad, added some effects, and then started to play the Piano on top of it.

I was very exhausted from all the touring and I guess that is what this piece kind of reflects. The result is a fully improvised take, only the fade-in and out werde edited afterwards. And if you listen closely, you can even hear a car slowly driving by my open balcony windows. :)

Whatever #1

snow was falling in berlin today, and i tried to capture this quiet winter atmosphere in #whatever #2. all sounds have been created with my piano, an iPad and samplr app and were recorded into ableton. enjoy!

Whatever #2

This track is the result of a session where we both worked with our own setup simultaneously, feeding the result together into a common mixer. That way we could both actively experiment rather than having one person “drive”. One of the main features of the track is a feedback matrix we created by accident which ran out of control, making a really great sound that luckily we were able to capture. You can hear it in the breakdown section. The finished track is oppressive, unnerving and disorientating. It is not supposed to be a “pleasant” listening experience but hopefully challenges the listener.

The video artist’s interpretation of this track presents an abstract representation of a “compound eye” in the form of a 2d audio-reactive array. It is inspired by his interest in early abstract film/cinema but powered by modern computation. In the most intense part of the song, the array of elements also becomes hyper-complex, creating some really interesting compression artefacts which should appear different on different playback devices. Rather than trying to make everything transparent, being able to see the medium itself in the piece, and in a device specific way, appeals to us. Similarly, depending on the system, room and volume the song is played back in, the audio experience is different: in the office this text was written in, the filing cabinet rattles and goes crazy with one of the sub-bass notes, in a club, different parts of the room might resonate with different notes.

The radio was always on in my mother’s kitchen   I remember I started putting albums on my older sister’s turntable at about 7   However, I was surly listening to Jazz, Country & Classical from my Mum’s womb   By 11, I started borrowing classic albums from the library & bought my first album, Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin, in the summer of 1973   

Music is my connector, my heart’s language, my joy, my ‘main squeeze’.  Music is healing & has been my main mental health therapy provider   A connector & communicator of my existence & emotional expression, all the days of my life
