Roots Daughters Bio: 

The Roots Daughters were established in 2009 by a duo of serious soundsystem addicts and roots music lovers from Pula (Croatia). They started out playing and promoting Dub/Roots music at Ljubljana`s Monday`s Dub Lab evenings at legendary Autonomous Cultural Centre Metelkova Mesto.

After being part of the regional scene for some years, Julie continues their mission when moving to Berlin in 2013. She meets Jahminta Zulu (Vintage Night Cologne) on the same musical frequency and they decide to join forces.

Heavily inspired by rastafari and jamaican soundsystem culture, the sessions are a space of sharing vibes & upliftment but also sharing knowlegde, developing skills and empowering one another. Both are passionate vinyl collectors who will make you experience Reggae Music in all it`s beauty and versatility - from its foundations to recent releases.

They are regurlarly organizing events, creating a space and platform to express and represent female activists in the scene. Another goal is to give credit and pay tribute to the great female* artists which have been criminally underrated or unheard of in the past by playing their tunes and help spread the message in the music - Equal rights and justice for all!

Sandokan Hifi, hailing from Zagreb, Croatia, was founded 2006 in Hannover, Germany, where it operated until 2009, running regular Roots & Culture programs such as “Radical Roots” and “Liberation Skank” in the local squat and autonomous cultural scene. 

From late 2009, Sandokan Hifi started operating from Berlin, building a sound system and establishing the first “Dub Disorder” sessions. In 2015, Sandokan Hifi moved to Zagreb, Croatia, and was soon after continuing with “Dub Disorder” sessions inside the premises of AKC Medika, the biggest autonomous cultural centre in the country. Many very successful sessions were done, mostly with international guests on their own sound systems and with Sandokan Hifi as the resident sound. In 2019 alone, the sound was playing more than 10 times in various Croatian cities as well as being the resident sound for the daytime stage at Escape The City Festival in Istria. 

With the beginning of the Covid pandemia and followed by locksdowns and the shut down of the entire cultural sector, also Sandokan Hifi had to stop playing. The earthquake of 5,5 that shook the capital city Zagreb in March 2020 destroyed the Sandokan headquarters entirely and damaged a good part of the control section and record collection. Thanks to many people in solidarity donating and helping, everything could be rebuilt with time and in September 2020 the sound was up and running for the last time until now in the court yard of AKC Medika. After that, new restrictions and new lockdowns prevented further operations. 

Since then, you can find Sandokan Hifi's selections on the world wide web in forms of mixtapes and live streams. Just search the sound's name throughout the www's known sites and platforms!

Sandokan Hifi is a Roots sound system with progressive political approach. A sound that plays strictly vinyl from it's own record collection, mostly 70s Roots Reality, 80s Rub-A-Dub and some 90's UK tunes – everything in anti-fascist and  intersectional fashion and in the form of a “local radio station gone sound system” - with live dubbings straight from the sound's control tower!
