With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group Dawn of Midi made up of double bass player Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi abandon improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. From close up one may see only dots, but when stepping back an undulating image reveals itself. “We didn’t want to create anything cerebral,” says Belyamani, “we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses.” 

“We wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage,” explains Israni, “and since the album never saw a proper international release, it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they release has done a lot for exposing unique instrumental and electronic music, makes it that much more interesting.”

Containing five synthesiser-led pieces, ‘Loon’ was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues on from the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For this new EP the duo wired an Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the mixing desk and performed live takes on both instruments. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape.

Like on ‘Stare’, their first collaborative affair in 2012, they simply followed what was laying in front of them, and this time they were driven by some new synths, a kick drum and tape effects. Indulging in dub, the tracks where all performed rather than engineered, with Ólafur riding a few elements on faders and Nils bringing effects in and out. After running several mixes, they went for the five strongest moments from this session. The release was announced on a joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com together with the launch of an intimate 45-minute studio film titled ‘Trance Frendz’, featuring another seven improvisations.

A debut release for both band and label, Parisian duo Paradis' bring two eloquently produced tracks to Beats In Space in the form of the Parfait Tirage b/w La Ballade de Jim 12" (BIS001). Admirers from afar of DJ Tim Sweeney's weekly on air institution of 12 years (from which the label takes its name), Paradis submitted demos hoping they might hack it for some play time. 

Reared on classical and jazz, turned young hip hop rebels, turned teen club crawlers, and then university machine tinkerers, Simon Mény & Pierre Rousseau grew out of genre jumping while young enough to stay ahead and settle into music making centered around melody and emotion. 

This touchstone approach is perfectly apparent on "Parfait Tirage", a track built around sublime synth ambiance, a compelling sequence lead, and what will one day be unmistakably recognized as the Paradis vocal sound. The b-side, "La Ballade of Jim", is a deep techno take on beloved French artist Alain Souchon's track from the 80s, and already a staple in Sweeney's live set. 

Each 12" from Beats in Space features original artwork in considerate & serial form. The first 12" features artwork by Bjorn Copeland, a 21st century schizoid collagist and member of NYC experimental music legends Black Dice. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a vinyl BIS logo cling. The 12" will be available on September 20th, 2011 from fine retailers worldwide. The digital version will be available October 4th, 2011 from the drab internet universe.

Titeknots returns in 2017 with wide spectrum club music for more adventurous DJs and listeners. Pushing on with the themes established in previous releases, these tracks walk a twisting line between ambitiously expansive orchestral textures and physical, focused club productions. 

DJs across the spectrum have shown love to Titeknots – from Monki, Gilles Peterson, Benji B and Phil Taggart on the Radio, to club favourites like Bonobo, Bondax, Mano Le Tough, Tom Trago and Todd Edwards. These productions connect to people whether they are listening on headphones at home or pushing through big club crowds at peak time. 

“Mustard Flower” has been a key highlight of Titeknots DJ sets for a while now, with many crowd requests for info whenever it’s been played. Based around a hooky plucked riff, the track blossoms into a warm and euphoric leftfield dancefloor weapon. 

“Help Out When You Can” follows, with the focus now on a delicate piano melody. Surrounded by tough drums and soaring strings, this track shows off the widescreen sound palette and varied dynamic arrangements that are the Titeknots calling card.
