Geritt van Hontorst, is the Dutch painter who, after a long stay in Rome that lasted 10 years, was able to assimilate the best of Italian painting of the period and become one of the most renowned Italian painters of the 17th.

Nei dipinti di Gerrit, o come meglio conosciuto Gherardo delle notti, l’influenza della pittura italiana è evidente nell’utilizzo della luce dei suoi dipinti. Il nome gli si addice perchè nelle sue opere le scene sono avvolte da un intensa oscurità e i soggetti sono illuminati da torce e lumi di candela. La fonte luminosa è sempre artificiale, per questo il suo stile di pittura viene definito anche “a lume di notte”.

In Gerrit's paintings, or as better known Gherardo delle Nights, the influence of Italian painting is evident in the use of light in his paintings. The name suits him because in his works the scenes are shrouded in intense darkness and the subjects are illuminated by torches and candlelight. The light source is always artificial, which is why his style of painting is also referred to as “by night light”.
