About 'Phantom Rhythm Remixed' (Out 6/25)

Beijing duo Gong Gong Gong 工工工’s raucous debut LP, 'Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏,' was recorded live in a room, on open-reel tape, with little more than vocalist and guitarist Tom Ng’s 60-year-old Italian pawn shop guitar and bassist Joshua Frank’s 1970s imitation P-bass. The minimalist group created a drummer-less sound that was more than the sum of its parts, inspired by back-porch blues, Sahelian guitar music, New York no-wave, Cantonese lion dance percussion, and, seemingly most incongruously, techno.
 
Electronic music and psychedelic rock might seem worlds apart. But Gong Gong Gong’s aggressively minimal instrumentation, exploration of locked-grooved repetition, and use of simple, undeniable melodic hooks combined to produce an unexpected aura of drum machines and sequencers with an excitable, human pulse. 
 
On 'Phantom Rhythm Remixed,' Gong Gong Gong bring to life a concept they’ve planned since the release of their acclaimed debut, curating their favourite China-connected electronic music producers to remix 'Phantom Rhythm' in its entirety. The globe-spanning collaboration features Yu Su (Vancouver/Kaifeng), Zaliva-D, Simon Frank, Howie Lee (Beijing), Mong Tong, Scattered Purgatory (Taipei), Knopha (Xiamen), Wu Zhuoling (Chengdu), Angel Wei (Copenhagen), and P.E. (Brooklyn).

'Phantom Rhythm Remixed' traces a common thread, organically expanding the palette of Gong Gong Gong into ambient club tracks, thumping dance music, cinematic soundscapes, and bit-crushed psych. With their ambitious assembly of producers from the global Chinese underground, the duo pursues their ultimate goal of building a cross-cultural scene that disregards genres and borders, creating a community unified by a sense of hybridity, experimentation, and fun. True to this concept, the LP will be released by Wharf Cat Records in collaboration with Beijing’s bié Records.
 
For fans of Gong Gong Gong, some of these names will be familiar; Danish-Chinese musician Angel Wei (First Hate) performs on 2020’s 'Rytme og Drone' tape, while P.E.’s Jonathan Schenke recorded and co-produced 'Phantom Rhythm.' Producer and DJ Yu Su operates between China and Canada; she and bassist Joshua Frank recently collaborated on a track for Su’s 2021 'Yellow River Blue' LP. And Simon Frank, who performs hardware synth music and DJs under his own name, is Joshua’s brother and bandmate in the duo Hot & Cold. 

The LP also features Howie Lee and Zaliva-D, two Beijing experimental electronic producers known for their idiosyncratic, off-kilter club music, while Taipei contingent Mong Tong and Scattered Purgatory bring in primal rhythms and elements of sample-based psychedelia and sci-fi soundtracks. Finally, Gong Gong Gong presents two renowned producers from cities non-Chinese audiences may not have on their radar: Xiamen’s Knopha, whose dubby grooves maintain a sense of constant evolution, and Chengdu’s Wu Zhuoling, whose take on 'Phantom Rhythm' standout “Wei Wei Wei” brings in the energy of high-tempo breakbeats.

Simas Slabačiauskas has been part of the Lithuanian music scene for many years. Whether it's through his iconic Smala nights (alongside Manfredas and Marijus Klimaitis), or his 12 Inčų po žeme project with the latter, to his more recent Tribal Ice Cream duo with Middle Sky Boom, good music remains at the core of everything he does.

With his first solo single under his given name, which also marks the second release on his newly founded Sorelsol label, he invites us to find our "inner sun" through the warm, organic rhythms of 'Sun Jacuzzi' which features vocals from his Tribal Ice Cream partner and guitar from JUODUOMENĖ member Tumosa. The release also comes with a stripped back instrumental version, and two remixes on the flip from Tim Paris and a clubby rendition from Middle Sky Boom.

Beware, Discomatin is back. In 2018, the Parisian crew of diggers and DJ’s originally known for their edits goes official with fully licensed and remastered reissues. For this new adventure, they chose an incredible in-demand French boogie EP from Diva, an eighties funk band from Bordeaux.  
Diva only released one EP with La Nuit, a sentimental, almost poetic boogie banger with great synth, guitar and vocal parts. The track could honestly have been a radio hit in the eighties with some real promotion. Today, it’s still time to make it right and it is already an anthem in the French underground disco scene.   
 Originally on the B side of the 1985 original release on Cactus, "La Nuit" is here available with its two different versions (12’’ and 7’’ mix) and comes also with “Prise Au Piège”, a more synth-pop influenced funk track which gave its name to the original release. 
 The band was formed by Gabrielle Andriampanana, Alex Louisor and Olivier Renoir. Before Diva, these last two already played together in the local new-wave band Bolton which was one of the first of the area to use synthetisers. Even if they had a small recognition at the time, the original release stood quite underground. Thanks to Discomatin, it’s now available to the real connoisseurs and still with the fantastic illustrations of French artist Camille de Cussac on the back cover. Lakeshouse release their second  EP on Paper Disco and its a fantastic four tracker that blends the sounds of the Norwegian club scene with exotic rhythms and Berlin melancholy.  Behind the name is a production team of DJs, artists and jazz musicians based in Oslo and Malmö. 

Their debut 'Firkanta EP' came out early this year and was well received by both DJ Mag and Mixmag for their 'bonkers' Norwegian spin on disco and house. It gained support from the likes of Alexander Robotnik, Bottin, RSS Disco, Andy Buchan and Diskjokke to name a few. 

Opener 'Folkemusikk' gives us the spirit of Kraftwerk crossed with Scandinavian cosmic boogie. All served with sparkling synth patterns, loopy melodies and a catchy Norwegian vocal hook that translates as 'this is folk music'. A sample of a traditional Norwegian fiddle cements the track's message: 'Dance Music Will Never Die!'. 

Next up, 'Papaya' is a samba-techno party with aggressive house-chords, wonky bass and a steel drum hook that carries you to the Caribbean. 

'NRK' slows it down into ambient-techno territory with a stripped down beat of soundscapes and basslines. Its a deep dive into dusty archives and ghosts in the machine. 

Finally 'Lov' is a heart wrenching electro-pop ballad. Diametrically opposed emotions are re-lived through human-robotic vocals, 606-drum machines and a bombastic horn section.

Lakeshouse manage to blend profound concepts and slick production in an EP of future pop and disco.

Awesome Orientalists From Europa is an edits project dedicated to awesome music and new politics. Inspired by record labels and DJs that specialise in reissuing ‘world’ music, A.O.F.E. turns the tables on the perception of who is exotic by rediscovering obscure and forgotten western dance floor tracks. The music published in the project fantasises about the foreign, tribal and oriental, but was in its whole created in the west, for the west.

All profits from this release are donated to NGOs that fight Islamophobia, antisemitism and racism in Europe.

It's hard to believe that that it's been a year already since we premiered Fabrizio Mammarella's wonderous track Unit from LAGASTA's brilliant 2019 Late Summer album, I guess it's due to 2020 having been such a joyous fun filled year that it's rushed by for quickly. Thankfully no matter what your 2020 experience has been LAGASTA have delivered a monstrous compilation yet again to keep our spirits sky high. Split into two editions it features a who's who of electronic music's finest artists and hot up-and-coming producers aplenty.
