À la fin des années 1990, sous l'impulsion du mouvement Schranz, un nouveau style de techno extrêmement dur est devenu populaire, que l'on appelle généralement Hardtechno. Ce style fonctionne à des bpm très élevés, généralement 150 ou plus, et se caractérise par une forte distorsion et un kickdrum proéminent.
