Saycet is a name that’s been on an increasing number of lips over the last few years, like a secret too precious to keep to oneself. With just a few releases to his name, the project by Parisian producer Pierre Lefeuvre has elegantly evolved in a resolutely modern fashion, attracting attention more or less everywhere around the world from people who like their music electronic and heavy with organic emotion. Using electronic music as his original inspiration, and influenced by the hypnotising, minimal sounds of both Germany and Iceland, Saycet has matured his sound thanks to intensive touring of Europe, Russia and Asia, gaining international fans at every stop. His new (third) album, due for release in early 2015, was nourished by this experience of travelling and playing live over the past few years. More directly, the new Saycet has taken inspiration from images and forms (a certain interest for design, architecture, and visits to Le Corbusier’s ‘Cité radieuse’), widening his style to include pop and radiant sonic mirages in which one can get deeply, deeply lost. The aim is no longer to choose between black and white and spirals of colours, but to stimulate emotion and take you on a journey, without or without a return ticket.
He has worked in close collaboration with vocalist & lyricist Phoene Somsavath on several songs from his upcoming album, adding a complementary dimension to his craft.

On stage, Pierre is accompanied by Louise Roam (vocals, violin, keyboards) and Zita Cochet (stage design, video projection)

"Exercise #3 (Building)" is from the beautiful new CFCF release 'Exercises' out April 24th on Paper Bag Records.

For his new EP 'Exercises', out in April on Paper Bag Records, Montreal's CFCF shows a different side of his pallette with a series of subdued piano and synth based pieces. Pulling from influences like Philip Glass, Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Borden, among others, and using institutional architecture and 70s Canadiana as a framework, the EP has a distinctly 20th century feel. Opener "1 (Entry)" lures us in with a melancholy bed of synths, while standout "3 (Building)"'s rolling piano melodies build to a cathartic crescendo. The lone vocal piece, "5 (September)", is a cover of the opener to David Sylvian's 'Secrets of the Beehive' album, refitted with 2-step percussion and wintry pads. This is a change of pace for CFCF to be sure, but no less cinematic and evocative than his 2009 debut 'Continent', though where that record evoked long stretches of neon road and epic rainforests, 'Exercises' is all snowy walkways and long corridors, endless escalators ascending to desolate concrete plateaus. Each track feels like an exploration of lost memories, studies in nostalgia, exercises in spatial remembrance.

AN ORGANIC JOURNEY

At first glance, Saycet's journey may seem peculiar. In reality, it is extremely fluid, as if guided by an external force pushing towards the logical fulfillment of his destiny as a musician, composer and producer. A backward evolution away from our current era, which churns out artists non-stop – a path that has made Pierre Lefeuvre – the brain behind the project for the last 15 years – a figurehead in the French electronic music landscape.

When he released his first album, 2005’s One Day At Home, he built upon a genre that had fallen into relative disinterest: deliberately melancholy, errant electronic music, made somewhat more accessible by pop melodies and inventive, experimental beatmaking. An outsider by nature, he was nonetheless spotted by some influential media outlets, finding an international fan base that would remain faithful to him through the years.

With time, his creative work became more refined, and his influences merged into a highly personal approach that succeeded in linking a certain tradition of cerebral music with an opening to a wider audience. 2010’s Through The Window and 2015’s Mirage continued the project’s evolution towards a more timeless sound that shone through its arrangement work and an asserted versatility. Tours of Asia and collaborations (with Juliette Armanet and Yan Wagner among other) helped Saycet grow further (yet still outside of the mainstream’s radar,) nonetheless finding his niche on the international music map. His approach to live performances cemented his place as an innovator, always in search of new aesthetic grounds, with stage shows that implemented video projection as a source of lighting rather than as mere visual illustration, creating a truly immersive experience in the process. 

Somewhat accidentally, Lefeuvre opened the doors to composing via images – a logical, uncalculated continuation for this production artisan, whose composition work is nourished by visual art and cinematic culture. He created his first score – for the 2019 feature Un Vrai Bonhomme – and thus started making headways into the circle of pop music composers who work with filmmakers. He also composed all of the music for La Révolution, a French series produced by Netflix (to debut in the fall of 2020,) as well as a soundtrack (split with Laurent Garnier) for the Canal + documentary Bastard Lion.

An ideal preamble for a fourth album recorded in his brand-new Parisian studio, which promises to be his most accomplished work. Wavering between melodic piano pieces and powerful club tracks, the album will feature the two complementary energies that inform the unique artist's work.

Going forward, Saycet is also slated to be in residence in 2021 for a one-of-a-kind creative project built around the Château de Versailles’ architectural heritage and instruments.
