With Minimal, Sonokinetic delivers the fourth installment in our current range of orchestral instruments. We have listened to our users, and built an entirely new system from the ground up, defining what we think is a revolutionary novel direction in orchestral pattern-based sampling.

Minimal would suggest a particular music style, and many of the patterns available in this instrument are very well suited for that style. However, we’d like to stress that this is indeed a very flexible instrument, capable of enhancing a broad range of musical arrangements and compositions in a wide variety of styles. Where Minimal differs from libraries like Tutti and Vivace is in its section-based approach. All phrases are recorded per orchestral section and can be used separately or together and in any combination, allowing for a great deal of variations at your fingertips.

The first thing that would strike you is the non-apologetic interface style without any gloss. Apart from this being a respectful nod to our Dutch art heritage on the outside, it also very much references the “form follows function” approach that Dutch design is famous for. There are no superfluous elements and we’ve arranged everything in an intuitive way. You have every control in one screen within an uncrowded workspace. You might not suspect it from just looking at it, but there are a lot of complex functionalities at your disposal from this one screen. Recordings for Minimal took place in Zlin, Czech Republic, in the same hall and with the same team responsible for recording Tutti and Vivace. The performances have been edited with the same meticulous attention to detail and quality.

Many innovative functions grace this instrument, mostly under the hood, as we believe that technology is at its best when you don’t notice it. One of the functions that might need a bit more introduction is the harmonic shift function. This element of Minimal can lead to great sounding results and also serve as a very rewarding inspirational tool. So please read and digest the part of this manual dedicated to that function.

More visibly, and in lieu of popular request, we have found a way to greatly improve the score view. Despite the pixel restrictions of the Kontakt window we’ve managed to squeeze in a clear and accurate score view, although you can still order a digital full-scale copy of the score, if you so desire.

One of our personal favourite instruments of all time, the Celesta (or Celeste), has been capturing people’s imaginations for centuries and will continue to do so for many years to come. The instrument really has a magical sound and every time we happen to cross paths with a real one and open the lid it amazes me how inviting this instrument is to play. Of course, most of them are a bit off pitchy the keys don’t always react the way you’d want them to but that adds to the beauty. You cannot force this instrument where it doesn’t want to go but it’ll always take you in an interesting direction.
We found our Celesta and the recording room in the Netherlands, in Hilversum, the same place we recorded our much-acclaimed Mallets library. We had the luxury of being able to choose from three different instruments, and I hope you’ll agree we picked the right one. 

We recorded in a medium sized, high ceiling studio with 5 microphones: A Neumann large membrane microphone for close (about 10 cm from the tines), a Violet Audio Flamingo stereo microphone for the mid position and a Schoeps Colette stereo set on the balcony. There are knobs in the interface that let you choose which sound you like best, or mix them. If you like your hall a bit bigger, use the reverb control where you can add some acoustics to the equation.

This all seems very simple, but there is a lot going on script-wise to get all the samples to play in the correct ways. There are separate samples for pedal up and pedal down, multiple velocity release samples and we have applied our round robin augmentation method that we first used in Da Capo and subsequently in all our multisampled instruments, providing you with up to 15 round robins per velocity layer per key.

Capriccio is our biggest Orchestral collection yet, both in terms of physical size and in terms of sound, which is just...BIG!
We had conductor Petr Pololanik approach the limits of his Capellen orchestra for these recording sessions, and the resulting energy, drive and power really comes across in each and every sample. Each phrase has been carefully treated from conception through production to implementation in the final instrument, to make sure it would work as a whole, and be as widely usable as possible.
We say it is big, and the sound is big, but as you can hear from the demos the sound has a diverse range of uses and is only limited by your own imagination. You can use Capriccio as a base for your composition, or to complement your existing piece, using only bits and pieces. It can be really loud and awe-inspiring, or gently set the mood.
If you are familiar with our previous orchestral instrument 'Grosso', Capriccio's user interface should look quite familiar. The basic structure of the instrument is the same, using 4 presets each divided in 3 layers, but there are many innovations within Capriccio that will make working with this library even more intuitive and flexible. Highlights include the 'phrase offset' slider, separate volume setting for release tails and MIDI drag/drop from the score view in the interface, straight into your DAW.
With Capriccio we’ve brought phrase-based sampling bang up to date. Throw away your preconceptions of stiff one-shot samples and use the power of the Capriccio interface to harmonise, syncopate, offset and blend every one of the 38,000 samples. We’ve wrung every bit of creativity and flexibility out of these phrases and built a bespoke interface that will allow you to do the same.
Despite advancements in sampling technology, you simply can't beat the realism of live played phrases and orchestral patterns so our goal is to make these as playable as possible, like a real instrument, with the minimum of end-user programming. These instruments are meant to stimulate your creativity, and based on the feedback we are getting, that is exactly what they do.
Please watch our range of videos if you want to know more about Capriccio’s inner workings. There are many 'hidden' features that will enhance your user experience a great deal if you know how to use them. For example, with Grosso we added 'bar sync' but for Capriccio we also added 'phrase offset’. These things are very complicated in terms of under-the-hood programming but we’re sure that the intuitive interface makes it easy to realize the potential of features like this.
All phrases for Capriccio are composed in 4/4, with straight 8th and 16th notes.
We have also included a 'runs' instrument with strings and woodwinds runs, a gorgeous and eminently playable multisampled percussion patch and a melodic percussion instrument containing Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Tubular Bells and Piano phrases.

Multi-section Ostinato with a film noir feel
Ostinato Noir is designed to play rhythmic Ostinato chordal patterns for Strings, Woodwinds and Brass that work particularly in a Noir setting. With muted trumpets and horns, extended chords, warm woodwinds and velvety strings it has everything you need to add a Noir vibe to any composition.
If you’re familiar with the sister Ostinato libraries and our approach to ostinato recording then you’ll feel right at home with Ostinato Noir. The entire approach is different from our regular phrase instruments in that we recorded separate intervals for various rhythmic building blocks. After careful editing we combine these intervals through an intelligent script that builds them into chords in 5 different voicings and 4 inversions. The new inversion arpeggio controls create inversion patterns at the press of a key… a fast and easy way to build interesting sequences.
Ostinato Noir recognises and plays 12 different chord types, handling not only major and minor chords but also diminished, half-diminished, augmented chords and many more. There’s a full list documented within the user manual.
Not only does the engine build the chords based on the inversion you play in the chord area, but when you play in the harmonic shift area it will judge which inversion it plays based on the chord that came before it, the chord quality on the key you're in and the position of the chord you're triggering in that key. This ensures that transitions are smooth and harmonically correct, especially important to creating evolving motifs.
We have returned to the superb concert hall we employed for other Sonokinetic orchestral libraries and gathered a selection of some of the greatest (and most precise) players to perform for us. With three full orchestral sections at our disposal, we captured the full range of the instruments, allowing a wider palette of timbres within the Ostinato engine and playing up to 8 notes simultaneously. Although on the surface the interface looks the same as its sister libraries, Ostinato Noir has been completely rebuilt in the back-end to work more smoothly, allowing for multiple orchestral sections.
This library coexists alongside both our Orchestral Series and our Phrase-Based libraries, being recorded in the same hall, with identical mic positions and even utilising some of the same players. Our orchestral libraries blend seamlessly together.

Gilmore, with the futuristic city illustration by Sergey Vorontsov.
On November 19, 2012 the album was made available through ExtremeMusic.
