It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. Soul Clap: Flashback Winter Music Conference 2008. In our hands, 100 copies of the first Soul Clap record a cute yellow 10″ called The Giraffe released on Airdrop. Now picture a backyard bbq at a bar formerly known as PS14 and a bunch of the world’s best DJs and America’s dance music industry wearing cheap sunglasses and getting their schmooze and booze on…

At the time we didn’t realize it, but looking back, Crazy Larry and Taimur + Fahad’s Cheap Sunglasses party was probably the moment that American dance music came together to form the movement it is today and we were there, wet around the ears and giving out copies of our vinyl to our idols.

So what does this winding story have to do with this Episode of The Adventures of Soul Clap? One of characters we met was a DJ named Simon Baker from Leeds, UK. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He had one of the bombs of 2007 in Plastik and just released an awesome album on 20:20 Vision?! Well, we were overjoyed to get him a copy of The Giraffe and not only was he sweet enough to sit down, have a chat and offer words of encouragement, but we immediately bonded and partied together a few weeks later in New York.

Since then Simon has always been one of our biggest supporters. From charting our tracks to coming to hang at our first gig in Leeds with all of 30 other people, Mr. Baker has been what the brits call a “legend, mate”. So when he asked to do us a podcast we were honored to have him on board and boy did he deliver with a mix of perfectly chilled morning house to take you back to your wigwam. And let us tell you, after a weekend staying in a Wigwam at Glastonbury we know just what he’s talking about when he says:

"This mix is based on the kinda vibes i would typically play back at my wigwam after hours, or just generally when i am in a nice deep and groovy sunny mood. I like wigwams, and i love merry go rounds even more… enjoy" Simon.

Flying Circus Miami Warm Up - Mixed By Audiofly

A clinic in minimal from the elusive Acting Press boss. 

Why do certain sounds cultivate a cult following? Simply put, it's often because they resist easy consumption. PLO Man and his imprint Acting Press lean into this. 

Searching for the Berlin-based DJ and producer, you won’t find much online presence, interviews or conventional PR. What you will find, if you look hard enough, is a catalogue of records and mixes with a kind of tape hiss charm (a spiritual successor to Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, but scuzzier and lighter on its feet).

Founded in 2015, Acting Press once seemed to belong to the short-lived "outsider house" trend, but is now synonymous with a certain strain of modern minimal, one that is analogue, spacious and pointedly opaque. PLO Man's output is equally sparse by design: this week, he joins the RA Podcast with a characteristically elusive style, accompanying the near two-hour mix is a one-answer Q&A that gives almost nothing away.

Stripped-back, ever-so-slightly sleazy and coated in dust, PLO Man's RA Podcast continues that lineage in style. Opening with the featherlight microhouse of Margaret Dygas, RA.988 unfolds into a carefully curated spectrum of minimal, dub and deep techno. Among familiar names—look out for the blinding Rhythm & Sound and Moodymann blend—are deep cuts and left turns alongside the odd outlier, like lovers' rock pioneer Gregory Isaacs.

Like the best of his forebears, PLO Man wants RA.988 to take time for you to settle in. But once you do, you won’t want to leave.
