OBLIVION

In creating this orchestral piece I wanted to use elements of conflict and drama, and drew on an experience from my past. When I was a teenager, my extended family was torn apart by a disagreement between my Mother and her best friend. The breakup sent shockwaves through the generations and caused many battles between individuals, rupturing relationships that were once harmonious and supportive. The conflict was a deep learning experience for me, and writing this piece was a way of processing the trauma of those years.

The title is a translation from Luces de Bohemia a play written by Ramón del Valle-Inclán. 
 I was aiming for a piano to parallel and reflect, partner the guitar. The freedom of resonance felt when experimenting with the old (1940's) overstrung upright at about 5 or 6 years old. I just love the dark resonance of the overstrung, cool, deeply reflexive and emotional!!! 😎
