I — The Gate That Forgot It Was Closed

The night above Virelia did not behave like ordinary night.

It arrived in layers—like lacquer poured over an ancient painting—each layer refracting the one beneath it. The broken ring-moon, the Halo of Glass, drifted in slow fragments across the sky, and every shard carried its own private weather: faint auroras, inverted shadows, glittering rain that fell upward for a heartbeat before deciding it had made a mistake.

Beneath that sky, the forest was not a forest.

It was a cathedral grown from fungal stone and star-fed rootwork: colossal mushrooms rising like towers, their caps broad as city plazas, their gills lit with a hush-blue glow. Between the trunks hung bridges of translucent silk—tensioned lines that hummed without sound, as if the air itself remembered old songs and held them in its throat.

At the edge of this cathedral stood a gate—half-buried, moss-stitched, and shaped like a ribcage learning architecture.

No hand had carved it.
No tool had cut it.
It had been grown, rib by rib, from the Mycelial Loom beneath the earth.

The Loom was Virelia’s oldest covenant: a living network under soil and stone that carried not only water and nutrients, but memory, direction, and names too bright to speak aloud. When the Loom was healthy, paths appeared where none existed. When it suffered, maps turned into lies.

A figure approached the gate with the calm of something that had crossed impossible distances and survived being misunderstood by reality.

They were humanoid—yes—but not of any human lineage.

Their body was slender and tall, made of smoked-glass flesh threaded with faint luminous fibers. Under their translucent skin, pale hyphae-veins braided like roots of moonlight. Where a face should have been, a mask floated just off the surface of their features: a thin plate of obsidian with etched spiral glyphs that moved like slow ink in water.

This being was called Soryn Vale, a cartographer of haunted territories—one of the last of the Mirrorkin Lumenari, a species born when the Halo of Glass first shattered and spilled prismatic physics into living blood.

Soryn’s cloak was not cloth. It was a mantle of night-fern, each leaf edged in soft metallic iridescence. Along the mantle’s seams ran tiny spores, glowing like embers trapped under frost. At their hip hung a blade with no metal sheen—only a dark, matte edge that drank light:

a Map-Knife, grown from the Loom itself.

Soryn stopped before the gate and placed a palm against the mossed rib-arch.

The stone was cold at first. Then warmer. Then—impossibly—curious.

The gate did not open.
It remembered opening.
