3 years ago I travelled to Colombia for the first time in my life. When asked about the experience afterwards, my response usually began with something along the lines of "man, you have no idea..."

Well, here ya go, "Exhibit A"

Sounds Delicious is the brainchild of one Theo Smildiger, an amazing chef and world class human being, the premise of the whole project being that it combines a professionally produced cooking show with the art of djing. This concept was sprung on me a little while after arriving, much like everything else I experienced. As soon as I made it to the finca where this was shot though, I realized the only things I could play would have to be absolute classics. Some are personal favorites, but a good portion are universal, most of which relate to either food or love. Most importantly, my intentions were to compliment the environment, and create a moment I could pull from throughout my life again and again. Considering I only had a day or two to prep, I'm very happy with how it turned out. 

Recorded early one morning in February 2014, en las hermosas montañas de Zipacón. The Distant Haunts

So I wouldn't call this a full-on party mix or anything, but it's pretty much as close as I could ever see myself getting to one for a Halloween-inspired tape. It's comprised mostly of industrial/EBM records from the 80's and early 90's, but there's still a pretty decent spread, genre-wise, as well a couple of relatively new records that i felt would slot in there nicely. A lot of these are some of my favorite dark dance records ever -- some being the more obvious classics, sure -- but there's also some campier stuff thrown in for good measure (y'know, to better encompass the tone of the season and what have you).

anyhow, hope this gets u pumped on playing dress up, and should you stumble upon this in the other 11 months of the year, give it a whirl anyway...might just hold up regardless

had a certain plan in mind going into the show, but it ended up being a beautiful sunny day in april. so, i switched it up and started with records that i consider calming and peaceful while the sun was going down, until gradually sinking into the headspace i had originally intended. 

but yeah, it's been about 7 or 8 years since i've made a mix that was strictly atmospheric, so it was nice to put something like this together and mix just based on mood without ever considering bpms and the like......anyhow...

The Long Count Cycle (Ambient Drone Special)

it's taken me a long time to really warm up to dub techno. i'm pretty sure the first track i heard that really struck me was Pole - Tanzen back in the late 90s, but i think that had more to do with the concept of employing a broken waldorf and hearing all those little burbles and crackles that reminded me of IDM without sounding overly sharp and clinical. other than that, i think i was usually bored but what i would hear because i considered most of it too mannered and same-y. and to tell you the truth, a lot of it is! buut i guess i'm finally at a point in my life where i feel like the nuance jumps out at me a little more. and with the best of the genre -- and i'd say this is kinda like half best of/half current -- you get this kind of glassy-eyed, low-slung mood that i've always been drawn to in terms of an overall vibe, only executed with a certain kind of exacting intricacy. so in that sense, having these types of stylistic limitations really helps me hone in on the craftsmanship as well as the depth of production.

also, with the heavier, moodier stuff, i feel like the focus on elements like panning and reverb is pretty much second to none, making the immersive/hypnotic aspects all the more effective.
