Episode 33 speaking to instrumental Techno producer CJ Bolland! He's realeased some of the most iconic electronic tracks ever made, including The Prophet, Camargue and Tower Of Naphtali - as well as doing a remix on the Prodigy's No Good single and many others for the likes of Depeche Mode, Orbital, Moby and New Order. 

He made the title track for the 90s clubbing film 'Human Traffic' - 'It Aint Gonna Be Me' with one of his greatest dancefloor tracks on the B-Side: Desolate 1. His track 'Sugar Is Sweeter' got the remix treatment from Armand Van Helden and became a worldwide dancefloor hit.  

We discuss his early influences, his musical journey and the people, studios and stories which formed his incredible and influential sound.

Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

The first seven volumes on the Tone Science sub-label featured 63 musicians (9 on each album) with varying backgrounds and styles, showcasing the wonderful richness and variety inherent in the world of modular synthesis. The next step was to transfer this concept to a live performance and hence the inaugural Tone Science Live concert, which took place at the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool on the evening of 22nd April 2023. 

All five musicians were set up onstage simultaneously and each played solo before joining together at the end. Field Lines Cartographer opened the evening with a beautiful set full of glistening textures and pulsating oscillations. Next came Nigel Mullaney with a more upbeat performance, featuring the famous “Pale Blue Dot” speech from Carl Sagan which seemed very appropriate as the 22nd April was Earth Day. After a short interval, Polypores took to the stage with a breath-taking display of modular synth virtuosity, with him constantly shifting and morphing the myriad sequencer patterns and tones emanating from his modular system. DiN label boss Ian Boddy followed with a sonic trip through four ambient sections, seamlessly mixing minimal ambience with vibrant pulsing sequencers before falling away to a tranquil conclusion. After another short break, Scanner played a stunning set featuring field recordings and disarming vocal samples and building up a monumental industrial rhythm from the simplest of ingredients.

The evening ended in fine style with all five musicians taking to the stage and performing an ambient drone piece inspired by the early American minimalist composers. At the helm was Scanner, mixing and shaping the overall sound of the music as it slowly grew in intensity to fill the hall with a mesmerising wash of tones. A fitting end to what was a fantastic evening of music from five musicians coaxing such varied and beautiful sounds from their small modular systems.

The entire evening is presented as a double CD in a 6-panel Digipak with accompanying 8 page booklet. A must-have album for followers of the Tone Science series.

This series will explore the Anthony Burgess Cassette Archive.
Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester in 1917. He published more than 50 books, including 'A Clockwork Orange' and 'Earthly Powers' and he composed around 250 musical works. His wife Lianna carried a cassette recorder at all times to capture her life with the author and their son. The archive is extraordinarily intimate and has been remixed by 23 artists in a new project which provides unique insight into Burgess. Conversations with the Anthony Burgess cassette archive (1964-1993: We are pleased to announce the release of a new collection of rare archival material from the Anthony Burgess archive alongside remixed ‘conversations’ from a range of artists and musicians including Scanner, Chris Watson, Band of Holy Joy, Clinic and Dinah Bird.

Double LP/CD curated by Alan Dunn in collaboration with the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and Guy-Marc Hinant, Sub-Rosa. 

Anthony Burgess’s second wife Liana carried a cassette recorder with her at all times to capture her life with the author and their son Andrew. This extraordinarily intimate audio archive of over 1,000 cassettes now sits with the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and artist Alan Dunn has been granted access to select excerpts from it and curate sonic conversations from others.

Disc 1 contains the very first and last known recordings of Burgess’s voice alongside domestic incidents, rehearsals and answering machine messages, while Disc 2 invites 23 artists and musicians to remix the rare material into a unique Burgess portrait far beyond ‘A Clockwork Orange’.

Biographies
Born in Manchester in 1917, Anthony Burgess was educated at Xaverian College in that city and at Manchester University. He served in the army from 1940 to 1946 and as an education officer in Malaya and Brunei from 1954 to 1959. He published more than 50 books (including ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and his masterpiece, ‘Earthly Powers’) and composed around 250 musical works. He was created a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by President Mitterrand of France and a Commandeur de Mérite Culturel by Prince Rainier of Monaco. He died in London in 1993. His books are still read all over the world. 

Alan Dunn is an artist and curator based between Liverpool and Leeds, where he is a reader in Art & Design at Leeds Beckett University. His projects have been presented at Tate Britain, ICA, Liverpool Art Prize, BBC Radio and Bluecoat. See www.alandunn67.co.uk

Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) is an artist and composer working in the UK, whose works traverse the experimental terrain between sound, space, and image, connecting a bewilderingly diverse array of genres – a partial list would include sound design, film scores, computer music, avant garde, contemporary composition, large-scale multimedia performances, product design, architecture, fashion design, rock music and jazz.

Since 1991 he has been intensely active in sonic art, producing concerts, installations and recordings, the albums Mass Observation (1994), Delivery (1997), and The Garden is Full of Metal (1998) hailed by critics as innovative and inspirational works of contemporary electronic music. He scored the hit musical comedy Kirikou & Karaba (2007), designed the sound for the new Philips Wake-Up Light (2009), and campaigns for Stella McCartney (2017), Chanel’s Fall-Winter collection (2012) and Jaguar (2014).

In 2019 he designed the sound for the Cisco telephone systems used in offices around the world, whilst his sound work in Vex House in London was voted as RIBA House of the Year. His work Salles des Departs is permanently installed in a working morgue in Paris.

Committed to working with cutting edge practitioners he has collaborated with Bryan Ferry, Dangermouse, Coil, Laurie Anderson, Carsten Nicolai, The Royal Ballet, Wayne McGregor, Merce Cunningham, Hermes, Hussein Chalayan, Philips Design, Mike Kelley, and Miroslaw Balka. His work has been presented throughout the United States, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.
