After we shared the moment Gilles Peterson played Studio Rio’s Samba version of ‘Lovely Day’, we’ve had a lot of requests to restart our mix series. We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be publishing some of the DJ sets we caught so you can relive a handful our favourite moments from across the weekend.

Phonica reaches out to one of the finest names in Chicago for our 129th mix.
Starting off in the 90's playing from cassette tapes with a group of friends under the moniker ‘Chuck Brothers’ Rahaan started to build an extensive house and disco collection that by 1996 would come to define him as one of Chicago’s stand out house and disco DJs. This would of course secure him with residencies at ‘The Spot’ and one of Chicago’s best clubs ‘Buddha Lounge’. A reputation he would cement with gigs all over the globe in the proceeding years also giving him an audience to his skills in production that have seen him release records with reputable labels like Lumberjacks From Hell, Z Records, Hot Biscuit, BBE and more. For this mix the Chicago legend takes us on a trip with over an hour of deep, soulful and funky disco house. We had a brief chat with Rahaan about the mix and what he has coming up!

Rhythm Section is proud to welcome emerging London based Producer, Serenda to the label with an arresting sophomore EP: “Second Skin”
Serenda's  productions draw from the canon of Black electronic music with fearless intuition-always deep, always moving, always unpredictable: executed with a deft emotional fluidity.

Second Skin is a shape-shifting sonic world where flesh, identity, and memory blur into something entirely new.  The EP wasn't written as an overt statement about duality or identity-but in retrospect, that's exactly what it revealed.

Revelling in the twisted, chaotic percussion associated with greats such as Maurice Fulton and Joe Clausell, Serenda’s music balances light and dark, organic and mechanical, tension and release.

The dualities of her approach are evident throughout the EP but despite all these opposites, a great sense of balance is found. Influences are worn proudly on her sleeve but conventions are confidently thrown out of the window. Serenda is an artist who refuses to fit into a box.

" I enjoy playing with the tension between seduction and defiance. I wanted to make music that feels like flesh under club lights-real, sweating, mutating."

 “Part Seven” teases us with a soft Larry Heard-esque Juno pad before it disintegrates into deconstructed-club era sound design and growling baselines reminiscent of Malin Genie at his most experimental. 

The second single “Ms. Nightstress” has us floating in a primordial soup of frenetic drums and cascading doom chords. It’s a heads-down-big-room techno curveball. Just when we think we know where it’s taking us, in come the saxophones and the R&B vocals - invoking Carl Craig at his most demented.

"People expect me to be one thing," she says,
“…but I never am. And that tension-that refusal to fit-is where l find my power."  

Each track moves with a different skin peeling away - guttural club rhythms, tender off-kilter grooves, distorted percussion and haunting motifs. Together, they form a body: shedding, sweating, mutating. It's music for the dancefloor-but also for liminal spaces, for becoming.

"I realised afterwards that the EP sounds so diverse because I am so diverse," Serenda says. "These different sounds, moods, and textures-they're all parts of me. I don't fit into one category, and maybe that's the point. I'm the common thread. I'm all of it…am dual."

This record  packs so much punch for a 4 track EP. It’s a major statement from a singular artist.
 It's music for bodies in flux; for those finding power in their own contradictions. 

“Second Skin is the beginning of the mythos," Serenda explains. "It's a premonition. A shedding-but also an arrival."

This is the most extensive and deep digging Scartip & NoDave set to date! 

Three hours and 40 minutes of pure unadulterated audio tomfoolery recorded live at Big Love Festival, July 17, 2025. 

We were given the honour of opening the festival so we dug out our finest and funkiest for the occasion. From disco to dubstep, hip-hop to house and many wonky and whacky flavours in between, this is the soundtrack to many Big Love attendees arriving, unpacking and settling into their new Welsh home for four days. Little did they know, there was no way back this adventure...

Keeping things slow and low on this one: While our previous sets have generally ended up rinsing the tempos and climaxing in some type of chaotic breakbeat skirmish, this mix sees us keeping to things around the 80 - 140 BPM bracket, giving us a chance to get even weirder, woozier (and sometimes wonderfully camper) than our usual vibe.   

As always, these b2bs are a total joy and a really cool creative exercise as DJs and friends. Nothing is ever rehearsed or discussed. We just pack our favourite tunes and see how we can complement each other, surprise each other and flip things in exciting ways.  

Huge appreciation to Big Love for having us, to Kaptin for listening to our long mix request and all the ravers, traders and workers who were bopping away inside and outside the bar tent. This was a moment. Followed by many more moments. Come closer and smell the momentum if you dare.

From Nottingham’s underground pirate airwaves on Rogue FM, to stages across the UK touring cities including Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, London, and Manchester, Scartip has forged a steady presence in the UK bass scene, morphing from Jungle / Drum & Bass into unexplored sonic territory.
A former resident with Detonate, Scartip has warmed up for icons like Andy C, Bailey, Nicky Blackmarket & Sam Binga (to name a few).
Red Face Recordings founder Scartip has also curated artist development workshops focused onsupporting emerging talent including Saliah, who smashed her first boiler
room in Dec ‘22.
One of the more challenging producers to define, with an eclectic hybrid of iinspirations spanning the electronic spectrum; disco, dnb, dubstep, hip-hop, house, leftfield, techno, ukg etc - Scartip is certainly one to dabble...
