Kyoto-born, Berlin-based DJ, producer and artist, Alex Kassian has become a firm favourite of ours over here at Phonica over the past couple of years. His sophisticated, lush and organic sounding productions have been picked up by labels such as Paramida’s Love On The Rocks and Alex Bradley’s Utopia Records in recent years. His most recent release, Leave Your Life, was released in 2021 via Pinchy & Friends, and we can safely say it was one of our most-played, and bestselling, records of the year.

Together with Hiroaki OBA, Alex is also one-half of Opal Sunn, who have been operating their own imprint Planet Sundae since 2017, through which they self-released a number of EPs, catching the attention of and support from dance music luminaries such as Andrew Weatherall and DJ Sprinkles.

Phonica Mix Series 93: Alex Kassian

C3 is a Vietnamese-American DJ and visual artist currently based in Ho Chi Minh City. She describes her sound as "ADHD," alchemizing techno with elements of vinahouse, trance, and everything in between. She models her mixing style after the laws of nature, where chaos births order. Seeking to find the flow within the unpredictable nature of the club, her mixing style invites you to feel comfortable with uncertainty. Freedom is her motivation. Transcendence is her endgame.

This mix was recorded in District 2 of Ho Chi Minh City using a 2019 Macbook Pro and Traktor Kontrol Z2. It starts calm and moody and builds towards high octane moments of ecstasy cushioned by rhythmic techno. Sonically I drew a lot of inspiration from the randomness of Saigon's fast-paced environment, with many layers of urban noises drowning each other out simultaneously and in perfect harmony. For me this mix encapsulates the feeling of going back to zero. Pent up energy is released and stabilizes when it reaches a zero sum. Every high has a comedown and eventually finds balance in the middle.

Alex Kassian welcomed the first sunrise at Solar Village in 2023, and we can now listen back to his performance. He took Wonderers on a journey that started downtempo and slowly built his set out, marking a new direction for sunrise performances at our beloved venue.

Scattered Waves is a cross-continental platform amplifying East and Southeast Asian voices in electronic music—both across Asia and throughout its global diaspora. Founded in Rotterdam by Vietnamese DJ, producer, and curator Kimmah, the project is based between the Netherlands and Vietnam, building sonic and cultural bridges between communities historically scattered across oceans and borders. 

Rooted in a diasporic narrative, the name Scattered Waves draws from the South China Sea, whose waves scattered Vietnamese communities across the world. These waters symbolize both the rupture of displacement and the persistence of cultural memory. Scattered Waves channels that legacy into a space for exchange and connection through music. 

The platform hosts club nights with all-Asian lineups across Europe and Asia, including a flagship Lunar New Year event in the Netherlands. It also organizes intimate listening sessions focused on ambient, experimental, and leftfield music by Asian artists, runs a record label dedicated to new sounds from East and Southeast Asia, and airs a monthly radio show on Operator Radio in Rotterdam highlighting voices from the Asian diaspora and beyond.
