So in five shows, "Graveyard Shift" assembles a current weather map of the musical landscape, which will be heard live on GDS.FM every second Sunday of the month, and then be available on the Schauspielhaus' Soundcloud account. Dieser Faust ist weit gereist. Die Inszenierung zählt zu den wichtigsten Arbeiten der beiden Intendanten und wurde 2012 zum Berliner Theatertreffen eingeladen. Theater Heute wählt sie zur Inszenierung des Jahres, Benjamin von Blomberg wird als Dramaturg des Jahres ausgezeichnet und das neue Ensemblemitglied Sebastian Rudolph als Schauspieler des Jahres. In der Begründung der Jury für den 3sat-Preis des Theatertreffens steht: «So wie Nicolas Stemann Faust Ⅰ & Ⅱ inszeniert, hat man ihn noch nicht gesehen. Seine Inszenierung ist selbst ein faustisches Ereignis, ein Grübeln und Ergründen, was dieses Drama im Innersten zusammenhält, was es bereithält – für uns heute.» Dass Faust heute als Zeitgenosse anmutet, ist verstörend, aber es ist die Gegenwart, von der Goethe erzählt: eine durchbefreite Gesellschaft von Radikalindividualist*innen, unfähig zu Gemeinschaft und Arbeit an kollektivem Sinn. Und der Teufel flüstert in die Ohren: Sei dein eigener Massstab! Statt Erkenntnis gibt es Machtgewinn: Frauen, Natur und Kolonien werden gleichermaßen unterworfen und zerstört – die Zerrissenheit in der Brust dient dabei als Antrieb und Ausrede gleichermaßen.

Wie kann etwas aus nichts entstehen? Diese Frage beschäftigt nicht nur die Philosophie seit ihren Anfängen, sondern auch den US-Choreografen Trajal Harrell. In seiner neuen Arbeit sucht er nach Formen, die sich frei und ohne äussere Einwirkung entwickeln. Ausgangspunkt des Projekts ist eine obskure Versammlung schillernder Charaktere in den weiten Dimensionen der Schiffbau-Halle. In der Zusammenkunft von Tänzer*innen und Schauspieler*innen des Zürcher Ensembles entfalten sich die Potenziale für Revolution und Schönheit gleichermassen, werden Konzepte von etwas und nichts in ein Nebeneinander gebracht. So entsteht ein Stück, das zwischen historischen Bezügen und Pop-Kultur, zwischen Alltagsgesten, sozialen Mustern und Posen die Kräfte des Körpers beschwört.

Alfred Ill soll abgeschafft werden. Er steht vor einem Tribunal und fürchtet um sein Leben. Als junger Mann ist er zum Täter geworden, nun, viele Jahre später, fordert die Klägerin Gerechtigkeit. Sie kann sie sich leisten. Als Dame von Welt kommt Claire Zachanassian in das Dorf Güllen zurück und bietet eine Milliarde, wenn jemand Ill tötet. Als junge Frau hat sie die Macht eines gesellschaftlichen Ausschlusses am ganzen Leib erfahren, unehelich schwanger wurde sie aus Güllen vertrieben. Dieser Moment sollte ihr restliches Leben bestimmen. Wie viel Vergeltung rechtfertigt die Tat? Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Rache und Gerechtigkeit? Und wie wird aus der Betroffenen eine Täterin? Nicolas Stemann inszeniert den Schweizer Klassiker mit zwei seiner langjährigen Weggefährt*innen: den Spieler*innen Patrycia Ziółkowska und Sebastian Rudolph.

After a little break, the mix series "Music for Theatre Lobbies" returns for the season 22/23. The newest contribution is by Berlin-based composer and sound-designer Grand River. The artist makes experimental electronic music with a cinematic touch. Her work, influenced by minimalism and ambient music, is atmospheric yet rhythmically complex, incorporating a wide range of contemporary compositional and production techniques.

The latest entry to the Music for Theatre Lobbies series comes from GIL, a dj and producer based in Berlin. His latest release "make hay where the sun shines" was released via Yegorka (label head Why Be contributed Music for Theatre Lobbies #10 a while back) at the end of 2022, following the EP "Storm Salon" from 2020 on the same label. @gilschneider is no stranger to the context Schauspielhaus Zürich: for Christopher Rüping's staging of "Der Ring des Nibelungen" he was part of The Ring Orchestra, together with artists Born In Flamez, Gil Schneider, Simonne Jones, Leo Luchini, Legion Seven, P.A. Hülsenbeck, Isa GT and Ixa, tackling opera and one of the genre’s controversial poster boys.

GIL - Music for Theatre Lobbies 14

Music for Theatre Lobbies #15 comes from Katatonic Silentio. Mariachiara Troianiello, the Milan-based sound artist behind the moniker Katatonic Silentio, works at the crossroads of electronic music, performing arts and sound studies. Both as a live performer and an independent researcher, she seeks to bridge different spheres and approaches to sonic production. Active as a DJ for more than 15 years, her sets adopt multiple forms, fluctuating between an analogue past and a technological, fast-paced future. At times, her sets focus on pure abstraction, consisting of ethereal soundscapes that seek to transcend the tangible through a mix of musique concrète, world, spoken word, ambient or dub. At others, they come across as concrete and club-oriented, crossing techno, broken beats or drum n bass.

Nach dem Erfolg des Stücks Bullestress folgt nun das zweite Bühnenstück von Fatima Moumouni und Laurin Buser für das Schauspielhaus Zürich: Für Regisseurin Suna Gürler entwerfen sie ein zugespitztes Szenarium über einen jungen Menschen, der über die Ungerechtigkeit der politischen Ordnung nicht mehr schweigen will. Und ein Streichholz fallen lässt.

Über die Inszenierung "Ich chan es Zündhölzli azünde" von Suna Gürler

Egal, wo der Romeo entstanden wäre: Stellen Sie sich diesen Tanz vor, den Menschen aller Herkünfte, Geschlechter und Generationen, aller Temperamente und Stimmungen tanzen, wenn sie ihre Tragödien hinter sich gelassen haben und nur noch tanzen. Trajal Harrell wird ihn nun nach Zürich bringen. Und vielleicht fängt die Geschichte da überhaupt erst an.

Über die Inszenierung "The Romeo" von Trajal Harrell

Galilei kann es beweisen: Die Erde dreht sich um die Sonne, nicht andersrum. Er bringt sich damit in Opposition zur Obrigkeit, zum Vatikan, wird beinahe zum Revoluzzer. Erst der Moment, da er seine Erkenntnisse öffentlich selbst verleugnet, stellt einen Kompromiss zwischen wissenschaftlicher Praxis und institutioneller politischer Macht her, der die Epoche der Moderne kennzeichnen wird. Was war das: brillante Strategie, versteckter Narzissmus oder Totalversagen?

Bertolt Brecht schrieb seinen Galilei Ende der 1930er Jahre im dänischen Exil und überarbeitete das Stück zweimal, erst in den USA, später in Ostberlin. 125 Jahre nach seiner Geburt und auf den Tag genau 80 Jahre nach der Uraufführung des Stücks im Zürcher Pfauen nimmt sich Nicolas Stemann das Leben des Galilei vor. Er fragt nach den politischen Widerständen, mit denen neue Ideen heute zu kämpfen haben, und dem prekären Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Macht im Angesicht von Krieg, Pandemie und Hyperkapitalismus.

Geschweige denn Unterstützung. Ihnen zu Ehren blickt der Choreograf und Tänzer Trajal Harrell imaginierend zurück.

Über die Inszenierung "Tambourines" von Trajal Harrell

Moved by the Motion verwebt Shakespeares kanonisches Stück mit Elementen der Science-Fiction, Satire und dem magischen Akt des Theaters selbst. In einer Adaption ihrer langjährigen Kollaborateurin und Autorin Sophia Al-Maria entführen sie uns in die nahe Zukunft, in der der Meeresspiegel einen apokalyptischen Pegel erreicht und so die wenigen Verbliebenen mit ihrem Menschsein konfrontiert.

Über die Inszenierung "Der Sturm" von Moved by the Motion

Eine besondere Begegnung, die in den letzten Jahren zwischen dem Schauspielhaus Zürich und den Zürcher*innen entstanden ist, ist die zwischen Kim de l’Horizon und Leonie Böhm. Mit Blutstück gehen beide nun einen grossen Schritt aufeinander zu: Bekannt für ihre radikalen Bearbeitungen von Klassikern, die die darin enthaltenen Gedanken und Emotionen erfahrbar machen, wendet sich Leonie Böhm nun einem zeitge- nössischen Stoff zu, der bereits den Willen zur Transformation in sich trägt. Und Kim de l’Horizon gibt Blutbuch, nach einem zehnjährigen Schreibprozess, in einen gemeinsamen, offenen Prozess.

Als Max Frischs Biedermann und die Brandstifter im Jahre 1958 am Pfauen uraufgeführt wurde, beruhten die positiven Reaktionen auf einem Missverständnis: Statt als Farce über bürgerliche Heuchelei wurde das Stück direkt als Aufruf verstanden, keine Fremden ins Haus zu lassen. Max Frisch war bestürzt. Nun nimmt sich Co-Intendant Nicolas Stemann als letzte Inszenierung seiner Intendanz-Zeit am Schauspielhaus die Schweizer Satire noch einmal vor.

Phuong-Dan’s all-embracing selection and boundary-breaking sets have earned him a wide recognition in the most eclectic spheres of dance music. Almost two decades behind the decks of the Golden Pudel Club and a sincere passion for digging have made him a seasoned veteran of the all-goes DJing. Never restraining himself to monotony – in or out of the dancefloor – he combines gigs all over the world with project specific works and musical programming. A good example of the latter are the Gatto Musculoso nights he hosts in Hamburg, which have seen through the years artists of every shape and size. He is a regularly guest at Düsseldorf’s Salon des Amateurs and played noted clubs like Robert Johnson in Offenbach or De School in Amsterdam – but also in art spaces like Haus der Kunst Munich or Kunsthalle Vienna. He played music at Intonal Festival, Dekmantel Festival, International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Foreign Affairs Festival Berlin or Überjazz in Hamburg.

Über die Inszenierung "The Köln Concert" von Trajal Harrell

Da rutscht ein Berg ab und ein Mensch verliert sein Gedächtnis. So die reduzierte Rahmenhandlung der Erzählung Max Frischs, die vor 40 Jahren erschienen ist. Der Protagonist Herr Geiser und der Berg driften sanft ins Vergessen. Die Katastrophe dauert und es gibt Schönes in ihr. Unter einem fast zärtlichen Blick verschwindet der Mensch und Demenzkranke Herr Geiser in der Erzählung – und statt der Erdmassen erodiert hier langsam ein Selbst. Die Inszenierung Alexander Giesches, die sich in ihrer Ästhetik zwischen Virtuellem und Analogem, zwischen Simulation und allzu Realem bewegt, macht die Schönheit in der Katastrophe und ihre Potenziale zur Heilung spürbar. Und stellt die Frage, ob das Erkennen der eigenen Endlichkeit nicht auch einen Neuanfang erleichtern kann.

"The theatre’s lobby is a transition space between the outside world and the more protected one of the theatre. Before the performance the excitement is palpable, people rush to get their tickets or wait im-patiently for their evening date. After the show, we share a drink and reminisce about moments from the performance that have marked us the most. A place where silence promptly gives way to hubbub and vice versa."

"rRoxymore's leftfield sound comes from years of experience in different kinds of performance—she's played electronic percussion in a hard rock act, spun rare groove and hip-hop and soundtracked art installations. She learned the ropes of production in a garage in Montpelier some 15 years ago, mostly with an Akai S950 and an Atari. Later, in Paris, she took an Acousmatic Music & Composition course before moving to Berlin, where she lined up her first solo releases for Human Level, a label run by her friend Jam Rostron, AKA Planningtorock, with whom rRoxymore played on tour. She's since appeared on labels like Cómeme, Huntleys & Palmers and Nachtdigital, before further refining her style with the exceptional Tautologies EP for Macro. She was also part of a sort of egoless supergroup, Decon/Recon, alongside Rostron, Paula Temple and The Knife's Olof Dreijer, AKA Oni Ayhun."

Chris SSG is best known as the co-founder of the now defunct MNML SSGS blog, recognized as a leading source of critical insight on electronic music. In recent years, he has moved from the online world into the Tokyo techno scene. He is the organizer of a series of MNML SSGS events, and is a resident at the semi-regular Sound Garden chill out parties. As a DJ, Chris SSG eschews standard dancefloor music, instead focusing on a range of sounds from ambient, experimental, kosmische through to more abstract forms of techno.

Gigsta, what happens in the theatre's lobby?

"Muted sounds of hands clapping, before crowds pour through the doors from the theatre. Whispers and wrinkled clothing echo in the corridor. They are made cautious by the silent piece they’ve seen. There’s a queue at the garderobe, a few more minutes for a potential glass of wine. Small groups of silhouettes are now in the lobby, 'on the way, on the move, paused, postponed, out of sync, out of joint, provisional, practically absent, say, not here …'

And then the soft notes of 'Slower' start playing."

A regular host on Cashmere Radio with her show Fictions, Gigsta plays a variety of tempos, rhythms and colors with a specific fascination for lower frequencies and the odd cut out sample. Born in Belgium, Gigsta grew up in Brittany (France) and is currently based in Berlin, where she writes a PhD about dance music criticism/literature and is a resident at Room 4 Resistance.

"The mix serves as an open invitation to allow oneself to glide and drift through physical and mental settings and to take in the proceedings in the lobby at a distinct pace. Transitory mind states, open spaces, fleeting events, an interplay of distilled emotions and stimuli. Sound, architecture and the interaction of the audience intertwine. And shape the perception of the performance, setting the tone for the duration of the night. Varying hues, timbres and details invite individual interpretations and states of attention.

Cross-pollinating a wide textural range of influences, Broshuda's music incorporates elements of sound art, electroacoustic techniques, chopped spoken word dissections and field recorded material, as well as more rhythmically oriented and noise-heavy excursions. 

Though kaleidoscopically varied, the work is held together by a playful sense of
experimentation and a willingness to explore new directions of sound through an experimental approach and the use of freeform production techniques to expand and further his already broad sonic palette. Pursuing a strong Fluxus inspired interdisciplinary ethos in his artistic output, the same attitude is applied to his audio works, resulting in detailed sketches which at the same time show and disguise their inner logic while transporting a diverse range of carefully distilled feelings and emotions.

As an avid Brodcaster, Broshuda has supplied one off audio-pieces and guest mix contributions for radio stations and institutions such as NTS, Cashmere Radio, Dublab, Rinse FM, Berlin Community Radio, Dummy Magazine, If Only & more, as well as having recently completed a three month guest residency at Bristol's own Noods Radio. 

In September 2019 he inaugurated his bimestrial radio transmission, "Intrinsic Speculations" on Radio LYL.
