Disquiet Junto Project 0485: Strange Weather
The Assignment: Remix the pure sounds of Chris Kallmyer’s traveling wind chimes to your own musical purposes.

This is the second of two projects in a row we’re doing with artist Chris Kallmyer. You needn’t have participated in the previous one to do this one. First, some background: Kallmyer’s “Two hearts are better than one” is a pair of wind chimes, one of which is depicted in this week’s cover image, crisscrossing Los Angeles at the height of the pandemic. Installed at homes for week-long listening sessions, the chimes formed a duet across a city and provided intimate experiences with sound for 16 families sheltering at home. Step 1: Chris has provided us with a recording of the wind chimes, a little over five minutes long. The audio was cleaned up by Alex Hawthorn to maximize the clarity of the chimes themselves, removing much of the background sound, thus situating the chimes in what might be thought of as a platonic space. Step 2: Do what you wish this the chimes. Remix them to your musical heart’s content. The one request is that at least once in your recording, let the source audio be heard clearly.

All sounds generated from the source audio.  Samples chopped and sequenced in Renoise.

I’m Sorry You Feel That Way is the 12th full length release from Schemawound. On his previous release “Instinctive Drowning Response” Schemawound documented the breakdown and aftermath of a personal loss.

“I’m Sorry You Feel That Way” finds Schemawound dealing with the next phase of processing and rebuilding.

Over the years Schemawound has played across IDM, Industrial, Glitch, Noise and Ambient. “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way” pulls from all of these while adding a layer of organic and acoustic sounds. From the cracks in the glitches and static there are glimpses of optimism not seen on previous releases.

Disquiet Junto Project 0450: Texture Analysis
The Assignment: Create a piece of music from sounds related to working with rocks.

This project is the third of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2020 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 2 through 6 under the motto “Tektonik” (“Tectonics”).  We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the second year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern. Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects will be played on a listening booth at the Steinatelier on September 5, as well as being aired on Radio RaBe (rabe.ch), an independent local radio station partnering with the festival.

Step 1: Download the field recordings made at Carlo Bernasconi AG, a company that has been working in stone for over a century. The sounds range from machines to manual tools to spatial ambience.

Step 2: Listen for aspects of the recordings that attract your ears. Focus on textures in particular.

Step 3: Create a piece of music combining elements from as few or as many as you chose in Step 2.

My Process:
Looking through the source files I instantly locked on to a rhythmic loop and begun building on it and tweaking and layering ambience.  

Fellow Junto Participant @Kiggler joined me on Discord to suggest rearrangements and changes that dramatically improved the flow of the track.  

All sounds are from the provided source audio (except for the kick drum).
