Grand piano recorded at Kysten Studio, Tromsø. Cut up according to the assignment (10-2-14-2-10 seconds). Added arbitrary and/or auxiliary noise to tie up the pieces. Left extra-curricular space for the reverb to die out.

A brief exploration of glitch for the Disquiet Junto Project.

Being a multi-track composition, all glitch-like occurrences were made by design rather than accident, thus at best a simulation of glitch, not proper system malfunction.

1. Cultural glitch: Shinon Full Digital Quran in blue plastic. Just not the proper context, use or presentation. 

2. Associative glitch: Bitcrusher plugin for 8 bit texture.

3. Hardware glitch: Eurorack modular with feedback routed through randomizing gates. Malfunctioning effect pedals (Bombay plastic delay, DOD 585). DCO and VCO synths playing below their lowest tracking pitch (Waldorf Pulse, Novation Nova).

Disquiet Junto Project 0378: Blue(tooth) Haze

The Assignment: Experiment with the sonic qualities of a failing signal.

Step 1: Find some sort of Bluetooth-enabled audio connection that is available to you. It might be headphones or microphone or other devices. The important thing is that audio can be sent to one device from another device by Bluetooth.

Step 2: Experiment with a sound sent via Bluetooth using the connection decided upon in Step 1. Work to find situations in which Bluetooth begins to fail, where the sonic signature of that signal failure becomes apparent. This will likely be due to distance, but you may find other creative approaches to achieve the distortion.

Step 3: Use the situation(s) located in Step 2 as the basis for an original piece of music, stressing an audio signal and then recording the way that signal distorts due to the failure of Bluetooth.

Process: I was hoping to get some nice break up from the Bluetooth receiver, but it worked strictly binary - either giving a clean signal, or silence. However, messing with the clock while recording produced some useful glitches and groans. Added random field recordings for story content - Most notably noise from the freezer and me boiling some eggs. 

Signal paths:

iPhone to Heritage Audio BT-500 for all glitch and source recordings. 

Telecaster through G-Force into SRV-330 and SPX990 for harmonic bits.

Portastudio 05 into RE-150 and RE-201 in series for dialogue.

Hymn (Disquiet0398)

Featuring Malka Older reading from her piece "The Divided". 

Used Ambient V03 to make granular drones from Older's reading, then adding bitcrusher and izotope Vinyl for additional scratches and glitches. Storytelling voice was de-verbed and summed to mono to stand out.

Supporting instruments and samples are played live and off time throughout, ending on grid to resolve. Additional interference courtesy of a dying Toshiba Satellite.
