Technosets

When Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus pioneered Dub Techno in the early '90s, a genre with origins in Detroit, Germany, and Caribbeans, the majority thought that is just a moment and that it will be short-lived. Thirty years after and the genre still keeps 'reinventing' itself with countless releases by several generations of producers who keep pushing the boundaries and keep exploring the genre's depths. In theory, Dub Techno has a simple formula - rhythm and texture. With technology nowadays, producers can dig deeper and further develop these two ingredients and make something unique.
The Vilnius-based record label, Greyscale is known for its Dub Techno aesthetics and it's been around for almost a decade. Their latest release, 'Dancing Street/Skyscraper Street', welcomes Martin Schulte, a talented producer hailing from Russia, to their impressive catalog. This double-single release is accompanied by brilliant remixes from Greyscale founder grad_u and Giegling and Delsin affiliate Vril.
Vril's remix of 'Skyscraper Street' brings the pure essence of Dub Techno, a genre that broke new ground in terms of electronic music that one might listen to away from the dance floor. The track is a slow-burner with lots of details that flicker and create a cosmic atmosphere that can do wonders on your home set up as well as the part of a warm-up set during the Techno marathon in a dark club.
'Dancing Street/Skyscraper Street' is coming out on June 16th via Greyscale.

The mountain was calling out to them from up above, it were as if the peaks themselves were demanding that they be climbed and conquered so as there may be no stone left unturned by man. The clouds hovered thick around each pointed top, in the distance they watched as eagles soared high. It was easy for them, without such fear of falling.

The morning air was cold and brisk as they watched from the riverbank beneath, it seemed an awfully long way up and a very far way to go. Was it worth the risk? To who would their effort be worth?

Soon they would pack up and depart, taking with them all that they could carry. For it was right to leave no trace and heaven forbid they upset the whimsical power of the mountain to crush them beneath its might and weight at any time.

Gem Wallow is set to release a new EP on Barcelona based record label Playground . The record features a fun assortment of downtempo tracks with a pensive slow moving ambience which is almost ritualistic. It's rounded off by remixes from Simple Symnetry and Francis Inferno Orchestra.

For his Dark Clover debut, James Davey a.k.a. Blak Nite unsheaths the technical prowess which had him pushing the boundaries of post-Ed Banger heavyness on his previous EPs, and repurposes it for slower, if not necessarily less intense jams. In simply and overtly trying to fit the pallete of what James sees as "the Origami Sound sound", he accomplishes so much more, his "Shadow Party" leveraging not only his considerable talent but a wide array of impeccable influences into bass music truly worthy of the oft-abused "future" hashtag.

Going for "something that sounded as if it was found in a ditch or gutter or down a back alley", Blak Nite delivers instantly memorable sonics – like a garbage pail coming to life, the din of its unholy movement providing the percussion, as it wrests old ghetto blasters from itself and plays whatever damaged tapes were in them when first discarded. "Dope Machine" firmly establishes this aesthetic from the outset, and employs a cinematic flair for mystery, before erupting into an uplifting assembly of manipulated vocals. "Shake" lays masterfully restrained Burial-esque heartwrenching upon a bed of brooding bass and truly broken beats. "Wicca" takes the deconstruction further... by now the beats are falling apart in real time before our ears, the vocals hauntingly and musically detune, with the song climaxing via Blak Nite's introduction of a signature grimy bass that seems to have built up organically from the crackle, hiss, feedback and detritus. "MoNY", by far the most jocular of the four, racks up the tension via its unnerving rhythm before revealing itself as a soothing finale worthy of innumerable gasps of contention.

Every track is "littered" with myriad small details, brief dialogue samples, movie quotes, all of them faintly audible at times... unveiling the considerable concept, meaning and soul poured into these songs, but only at the cost of lenghty repeated listening. Dim the lights, and have yourself a shadow party.
