DFA Archived Selections (2018-2020) created weekly as an alternate history of new release Friday - Part 1

Keeping up to date with Soil Records is proving to be quite complicated, their catalogue grows vertiginously with several monthly releases, always combining cassette and vinyl formats. To this frenetic activity, we have to add the suggestive that it is to check the great cast of artists that appear on the label, with many known names and others that are not so well known and that we are grateful to know.

Having just completed three years of this project, we can count 48 albums released on tape and 13 on vinyl. This thirteenth is an EP signed by the Argentinian producer Distant, who after his contribution to the second volume of the series of various artists Tears For Fears, returns to Soil with an album in which 4 different authors adapt their criteria to the same track.

The original Carmesí Diabla track will be released shortly on cassette and on this release it is reinterpreted with 4 very different outcomes. The first is a version by Thomas van Linge, known artistically as Randstad and for being the boss of BAKK and Rubber. The remix is sweeping and energetic, with a consistent punch, an arpeggiated bass line that fits perfectly with the strength of the track and several other resources such as acid lines and a voice that emerges from the guts. The second cut on side A is by German Marc Trauner, a legend of European electronic music, known for his countless aliases such as the mythical Mescalinum United project, although this time he works as The Mover. His version is conceived in a different universe than Randstad's, here it doesn't flow in a bellicose environment, but rather coexists in a docile and elegant context, with an electro-oriented direction.

The B-side opens with a version of another legend of the European industrial scene. In this case it's the Italian Max Durante, who, with his reliable techno-industrial, develops a remix in which the crushing kick is the centre of attention. Melania's reinterpretation closes the EP with a fierce and relentless twist, with an ostentatious punch although, unlike the previous track, it adopts an atmospheric character with several chordal incursions that do not alter its tonal quality.

The album is full of facets ranging from Post Punk to Industrial / Ebm with only an almost entirely Metal intro .. it is a dystopic of sounds that recall the 90s, worked with modern ideas. The GLANZ + ELEND, unveils "61 + 1 HYMNS FOR THE CHILDREN OF MYNAS | TEARING OF THE TEMPLE Charity VA 002," a collaboration featuring 61 artists uniting to break the silence surrounding the plight of Palestinian children. March 20, 2024, marks the release date of this impactful compilation, dedicated to partnering with organizations like the Palestine Children Relief Fund, Medical Aid Palestine, and Save the Children. As the project invites listeners to join in solidarity and support, it acknowledges the invaluable contributions of the artists involved, emphasizing the collective effort required to make a lasting impact on the lives of Palestinian children. Together, through the transformative power of music, a beacon of hope shines amidst the darkness of conflict, reminding the world of its humanity and the imperative to stand for justice and peace.

MM PREMIERE 045 | 909distortion & AXGGAA - A Violent Mechanical Entity [𝗚𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗭 + 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗗]

10 years ago Power Station started in Melbourne, Australia as a weekly Saturday club night that turned into a label releasing music from the residents and friends of the party. Since the pandemic, we have been quietly re-constructing the plant due to the heavy impact of the effects of covid but are ecstatic to announce we are ready to fire up all the cylinders in the station again, this time with clean renewable fusion energy and new music.

To re-boot, we invite Kris Baha back to the station with a dance floor summer ready EP, “Breathe” which almost feels like the next progression after his last solo EP on the label all those years back in 2016 with ‘Mind Your Head’. ‘Breathe’ is a hazy reimagining of the mid 90’s/ early 2000’s y2k dance era while all still retaining Kris’s signature muscle baselines, textural ear candy, laced in euphoric synth lines. Channeling the era, in the lens of now’ using techno kicks, prog trance / 90’s synth lines and EBM influenced bass and sequences, for any fans of 90’s PVC trench coats and speed shades.

‘Mescalin Dreams’ Anyone that has followed the white rabbit knows of mirrored realities so Kris takes a Techno approach to prog trance while still retaining his classic EBM influenced bass line. “Mescalin, the only way to fly”

‘Breathe’, the name sake EP is about taking a moment to actually breathe, deep, into yourself especially in this climate. Hi pitched vocal samples run through out the track that symbolise the madness of the inner dialogue being juxtaposed on to the mantra, 'Breathe, Breathe, Breathe with me" - all fuelled by the hyper bombardment of social media, grabbing, holding your attention....you just need a moment to breathe to find your self.

‘Grains of Time’ is a euphoric summer hitter, a reminder of all the early morning closing moments on the dance floor, lost in ecstasy, lost to the dance floor, lost in the the moment and it whispers, ‘your soul is mine’

‘Bite Me’, is a hi bpm techno trance shell, found in the station years back but re-calibrated with a Chemical Brothers style ebm sequence, biten by techno vampires.

Jay Glass Dubs sublimates Athenian distress and ennui into plasmic dub ether on ‘Plegnic’, his lushly evolved 1st collection of new material for Ecstatic, following from their acclaimed, 2LP ‘Dubs’ [2017] set of his earliest, hard-to-find tape releases. 

Deconstructing and rebuilding Jamaican dub with musique concrete production methods and a lingering air of inspiration from new age and Laïko, or Greek popular music, on ‘Plegnic’ Jay Glass Dubs fascinatingly evolves his sound with richer melodic and harmonic arrangements in a concerted effort to bridge and expand the nostalgic, esoteric and dancefloor dimensions of his unique sound world.

The key to the record lies in its title, ‘Plegnic’; an extinct word meaning “to strike like a hammer”, as well as its palpable sense of nostalgia. In this archaic context, JGD uses vintage machines and obsolete samples into junction with vocals from Yorgia Karidi - sound artist and coincidentally former beau of his childhood neighbour, and Andreas Kassapis one of his oldest friends, who provides the cover art - to conjure a strikingly new, mutated take on classic and well-trodden styles; metaphorically and anachronistically renewing their purpose while connoting his newfound dancefloor drive in the process.

Recording took place at his mother’s house in the Athens suburbs, with Fugazi’s ‘Steady Diet of Nothing’ on repeat. It was here that he dug out an old Juno, a Yamaha RX5 drum computer, and some “…crappier equipment” that provides the structural scaffold to his array of nostalgic, melancholic Laïka samples, which could be considered the ghost in the shell or the diffused soul of this superb five part crop.

On the A-side he sets out to spook with the desiccated, teetering steppers motion of ‘Temple Dub’ featuring heavily processed vox by Yorgia Karidi, but the heady nostalgia takes over with a sublime tactility in the vaulted chorales and endless reverb tails of ‘Umbro Dub’, and again in the aching sehnsucht of ‘Mouthless Dub’, where traces of Laïka’s bouzouki melodies most beautifully glimmer thru. 

However, the B-side is far more upfront and up-for-it, firstly putting his weight behind the cranky skank of ‘Dry Dub’ with its hexagonal drums and acidic bass squirm, then in the super squashed swagger of ‘Fearless Dub’, a near 10 minutes long pinnacle of his dancefloor output to date.

Ultimately Jay Glass Dubs’ music is riddled with the kind of nostalgia that can make an unfamiliar piece of music feel like an intense déjà entendu, like you’ve heard it before in a dream or some altered state. That’s a rare and precious thing.
