I interviewing Dr. Steve Wing for a class radio project. Then, out of the blue, I saw a TED talk logo flash across his office screen. The gem from that interview wasn't about epidemiology or UNC professorship. It was about the extremely bizarre experience of giving a TED talk - as a scientist. In 2007, British-born pathol­o­gist and UNC pro­fes­sor Dr. Oliver Smithies flew to Stock­holm. It wasn’t just another sci­ence con­fer­ence. He was off to receive a Nobel Prize in Phys­i­ol­ogy. The les­son he brought with him wasn’t all about tri­umph. Fail­ure was one of three most impor­tant lessons in his career, he said at the Nobel ban­quet. But there's a trick to it.
