Puy de Sancy is renowned for its picturesque views, so it was just right for a getaway. Needle and Plate set off down the slope in the early afternoon to enjoy the playful landscapes. Gusts of wind mingled with the chirping of birds and blurred into a unified soundscape, mimicking a rare vinyl of field recordings.

Each step was immersive, allowing one to drift toward the tops of the trees, get lost among rustling leaves, and take a look at oneself from the outside. The daylight was replaced by twilight filled with the anticipation of camping and a pleasant fatigue which did not stop one from putting up the tent. Now there was nothing superfluous left around – only the crackle of the fire, two merry men and a magic joint.

– Can you believe it? I can feel the universe sequencing.
– Yeah, that's a good one. I wonder how our homegrown bush is doing. All right, look what I got.
– Did you bring your portable speaker again? I thought we had a deal.
– You know how much I love music. Don't be mad. Have you heard of these two?

Olympia, the lead single and opener from house duo Frank & Tony’s (Francis Harris and Anthony Collins) upcoming album Ethos, rises, vaporous and compelling, from some mythic place, obscure and majestic as the song’s namesake. 

This is largely thanks to the orphic vocals lent by Eliana Glass, whose own solo full-length debut (also produced by Harris) will be released in late 2024. 

Her third track released in partnership with the pair, Olympia is a perfect ceremonial that thrums thanks to Glass’s lyrics, which function as a meditation on the name itself that sits perfectly in her reedy, devotional lower register.

Lui Mafuta presents This Ain’t Jazz, a boundary-pushing new EP that fuses live musicianship
with electronic sensibility - an exploration of jazz influence through a deeply personal and
collaborative lens. 

The release is available on digital platforms and as a limited vinyl edition.

At the heart of This ain’t Jazz is a long gestating idea: to bridge electronic music with an
organic, band oriented aesthetic. Lui Mafuta reunited with four longtime friends and
collaborators: Paul Janoschka, Felix Roos, Jonas Esser and Benedikt Jäckle - who all studied
music together in Mannheim before scattering across the globe. Under the loose collective
named Weiller, they came together once again to create a sound that lives between genres.

The EP is a globe spanning production. Piano was recorded on Paul Janoschka’s Steinway in
his Frankfurt apartment; trumpet and clarinet were tracked in a rural French studio with Felix
Roos; drums came from New York via Jonas Esser; and saxophone was laid down in Lui’s own
studio in Mannheim alongside Benedikt Jäckle. All elements were finally assembled and
shaped into a cohesive vision back in Mannheim.

“There’s less synth work on this one than usual,” Lui says. “Most of the textures come from
the instruments themselves and a lot of sample mangling. I wanted it to feel raw, human and
alive.”
Despite its title, This Ain’t Jazz is a love letter to jazz’s influence. “I called it that just to be
safe,” Lui jokes. “It isn’t jazz but it’s coming from that space.” The project also serves as a
reconnection to his roots: two of the four featured musicians are teenage friends from his
earliest days making music.

'Fahrenheit' begins with tightly woven woodblock tones, sitting harmoniously alongside overdriven, reverb-soaked claps. The introduction of drum and cowbell brings up the pace and a growling bass provides the foundation, but as the track develops the many textures in its undergrowth become apparent. From sawtooth synths to the slap bass, echo’d voice interjections and glistening pan pipes, these are just some of the examples of what a close listen can uncover in Daniel T’s dense soundscape.

Ly Sander Releases "Lay Down" Featuring Berlin Based Singer Jules Etienne. This Deep And Poetic Tune Is The First Extract From His To Be  Released Album On "Special Place Recordings".
When Jules Etienne provided these dazzling vocals, Ly Sander knew they deserved the song to be built around them. The poetry and dreamy emotions of the lyrics fully embrace us with this slow tempo in-cantation. Ripperton brought his own magic by bringing the track back up to club speed.
"I had invited Berlin based Jules Etienne to record some lyrics to a preexisting uptempo instrumental" explains Ly Sander. When I witnessed their deep and intricated poetry, I decided to build a whole song from scratch». The result is Lay Down, Ly Sander’s first track not to bear any link with his previous efforts that focused on danceable music. It’s ultra low tempo is somewhat intriguing. «I clearly had my album in mind upon producing this track. "A track that you will enjoy at home rather than in the club" says Ly Sander who’s album "Landing" is to be released next year on Special place recordings.
Ripperton is certainly one of the most thought after electronic music remixers, with over a hundred reworks to his credit for artists such as Radiohead, Laurent Garnier or Beanfield. When Ripperton heard Jules Etienne’s impeccable vocals, not only did he accept this remix duty but took over his holiday time to do so. «It is so rare to get to work on vocals where everything falls right into place» says Ripperton. "I really took time to take this track where I wanted it to be". Ripperton also chose to match the vocals to an instrumental at the original speed of 120bpm, making it fit for the dancefloor where it could well become a new favorite.
