Francis Harris "You Can Always Leave" [clip]

Francis Harris’ Thresholds album dropped on his own Scissor and Thread, garnering rave reviews for an album steeped in atmospheres, drone textures and electro-acoustic explorations. 

It’s an album far removed from the dancefloor, but he’s also managed to curate a remix package from some of the most talented and boundary-pushing artists active on the fringes of the electronic music space. 

First up is Manchester resident Hidden Spheres’ remix of Earth Moves, which is flipped into a pulsating slice of electronica. 

Yu Su, the up-and-coming producer currently living in Canada, takes the same track on a different journey, resulting in a slinky, affecting piece of music that eventually falls into a deep groove.  

Speaker Music - the moniker of ‘rhythmanalyst’ DeForrest Brown, Jr., delivers two reworks of the albums title track Thresholds. The Rhythm Remix focuses on the original’s brass washes, and adds a thick, playful bass rhythm. The Studio Soul remix is more a freeform piece of audio manipulation and editing, resulting in a transportative piece of work that fully compliments the original track.

Black Light Smoke lends this remix a wounded, uncertain beauty. Leah Lazonick's voice feels distant and fragile, floating through a veil of distorted percussion and analog gravel. It seems to be a piece of music that breathes on its own. First loose then dense and full of unresolved feelings.  Glory Club is a collaborative project tied to Jordan Lieb, featuring moody, vocal-led productions with artists like Léah Lazonick. The remixer Black Light Smoke is Jordan Lieb’s solo alias, known for a gritty, analog approach to electronic music.

Released in 2014, it still seems like a strange dream that you can't quite place. It's a rare kind of remix that unfolds a lot. A natural pick for our Classic of the week selection.

Multi Culti World Records proudly presents Culto Del Sol from Italian artist Oltrefuturo.
 
Conceived as a musical articulation of philosopher Tommaso Campanella's visionary The City of the Sun, the album is inspired by the city's concentric circles, each track is imagined forming part of a cosmic spiral. From within a cloud of dense weed smoke, Oltrefuturo explains: 'the spiral is the natural form of knowledge: an infinite return that expands toward new visions.' 

The utopian ideal of communal property finally gets its groove on with genre-bending rhythms that trance 'a-lento' all the way from 17th century Dominican Friars to brainiac futurist techno producers. If there's one thing the world can always use more of it's multi-temporal trance from ecstatic Italians.

Available digitally in two parts from in February and March, 2025, with a super limited cassette edition exclusively via Multi Culti Bandcamp and through Oye Records in Berlin.

Proper quirky vibes on our amazing imprint once again, finally Florinsz Janvier - is not only having an extraordinary name but an EP to go along with it.

We were blown away by the old school vibes of 'Juno Compote', while 'Astana' caught us off guard (easily distracted) and after listening to 'Oscillation Test' (featuring new-kid-on-the-block Bas Dobbelaer) we woke up in another timezone.

Wrapping up the package, we got the amazingly talented Eversines delivering the dopest break mix of 'Oscillation Test' we could ever wish for, while the legendary Lauhaus came sneaking in thru the backdoor to deliver his probably most chunky remix ever- of Juno Compote.. damn dude.

No fooling around here, straight up future shit!

Hidden Spheres is the alter ego of Manchester’s Tom Harris, who first made his mark on the underground circuit with his release 'The Bloos' on Moods & Grooves, before following it up with the much in demand ‘Waiting’ on Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii.  

Here, Tom joins the Scissor & Thread family, the Brooklyn label founded by Francis Harris, and home to music that traverses a number of boundaries. Hidden Spheres fits right in - the five track 1985 EP blends house, broken beat, ambient, jazz and other elements into a heady brew. 

'King Tut' starts proceedings, a laid back jazzy groove, rich in textures and soulful flourishes.  

'My Names' touches on the UK broken beat legacy of 4 Hero and Bugz in the Attic - an off kilter groove layered with sweet jazz and house inflected licks.  

'Karl' is a much more direct dancefloor track, albeit with the deepness that we expect from Hidden Spheres.The penultimate track '1985' steps into the unconventional house vibes of Detroit's third wave.

'Soon We’ll' finishes up the EP - a supremely jazzy piece built around the sax, piano and washes of strings and ambient elements - a superb closer for a deep and heartfelt release.
