Nadia Khan’s sublime Port Ana EP dropped towards the end of 2020 on the Scissor & Thread imprint. It’s deep, emotional sound palette resonated with the state of the world at the time, and signalled Nadia as an artist exploring new and deeply affecting sonic territories. 
This collection of remixes brings some of those tracks into new realms, conducted by CCL and label boss Francis Harris. 
CCL bring a new rhythmic take to the tracks Rain Again and Conversation - both are augmented and embellished with deep, tripped-out beats perfectly complementing the liquid soundscapes and melodic flourishes of the originals. 
Francis Harris’ take on Conversation goes even deeper, dispensing with almost all drums or percussion until near the end of its 9 minute runtime instead focussing on the interplay of pads and an ebbing and flowing bass line.

Frank & Tony drop their new Dream Vibration EP some 5 years after their last outing as a duo with the much-celebrated Odes EP. 

Having teased the full release with two upfront tracks - Time Out Of Mind and Timmy Regisford’s masterful instrumental rework of Stretch Out Like The World, we now get to enjoy the full package. 

Title track Dream Vibration kicks off with a lazy breakbeat, floating, barely-there chord washes and eventually and slowly reveals a thick, low kick and deep sub to drive things along. 

Frank & Tony’s original version of Stretch Out Like The World features Eliana Glass on vocals - a melancholic but tough track that exudes a classic in the making. 

Timmy Regisford’s vocal mix amps up the percussion to create a hypnotic club jam idea for an early morning Shelter dancefloor.

The next release from the re-activated Frank & Tony drops on Scissor and Thread. Following on from Dream Vibration - which broke a five year hiatus from the much-lauded production pair of Francis Harris and Anthony Collins - Eastern Meantimes brings us a sublime set of tracks and remixes. 

The original features New York artist Eliana Glass, whose sultry vocals ride above a deep, atmospheric groove and lush pads and washes. 

The track is also presented here with two stellar remixes from Timmy Regsiford, the New York legend who has been defining the sound of house in the city for nearly 40 years. 

Here his vocal and instrumental remixes are smooth, deep and infectious, sure to light up discerning dance- floors the world over. 
Frank & Tony’s Absence is the other original track here, a thick, pulsing bass-driven roller punctuated with sharp snares and the pair’s trademark ethereal pads. 

There’s also a digi exclusive where Regisford teams up with DSOL for a ‘retouch’ of Eastern Melodies - giving the track another flavor, rich in additional percussion and a slightly heavier groove.

Following the success of their EPs released last year on Scissor and Thread, Frank & Tony return with another outing of deeper than deep house with a three track EP including an expansive collaborative exploration with Comatonse recording artist Will Long. 

The title track, Understanding takes a nod to 90s Chicago deep house with a slow rolling groove set against plush pads and euphoric stabs sure to send dancefloors swirling in the earliest of nights and mornings alike. 

We Begin, a dreamy trip of emotive soundscapes, kicks things up a notch with jazzy undertones but a drive meant for peak times as it unfolds in moods and grooves for ages. 

The EP then culminates with a vast rework of the same track in collaboration with Comatonse artist and DJ Sprinkles collaborator, Will Long, pushing the EP to psychedelic lengths as the essence of what we call a house groove reaches new idiosyncratic heights.  Essential.

Will Long is an American artist. He curates and manages the label Two Acorns, as well as producing music since 2005, in various forms under his own name for Terre Thaemiltz's Comatonse Recordings, and as Celer for his own label and many others. 

Here he joins the perfectly aligned Scissor and Thread label of Francis Harris and Anthony Collins for the Too Much EP. 

"Too Much" is a deep cut from the same grooves as the Long Trax series," says Will Long, "a further entry for the downtrodden, the overwhelmed, and those that think change has come. A midnight meditation of intentional simplicity, strained, and on that night train."

The title track is lush, loose deep jam that combines wistful, warm pads with an insistent groove and choice samples.  

Francis Harris steps up to provide one of his signature reforms, adding a little more percussion and drive to the track, while DJ Aakmael (Greg Stewart) offers up another version that takes the track somehow even deeper, adding some additional instrumentation and raw sounds.

fka boursin is a DJ and producer out of Bristol, UK. 
Previously known as DJ Boursin, he is recognized for his deep, ambient-infused house music that explores political dimensions of clubs and identity politics.

Welcomed into the Scissor & Thread fold, fka boursin shares two cuts of deep and introspective electronic music. 

The original Listless Intertext is a hazy trip through ambient soundscapes, shuffling rhythms and half-caught conversations, drifting across a 12 minute run time that slowly evolves and shifts with time.  

"Listless Intertext is a track centred around the "failed" employment of cheap vocoder software that attempted to process explicit words and phrases across 11 minutes." says fka boursin. "Instead, the vocoder output made any words indecipherable and I was left with thematic vagueness. The final text of the track is simply a submission to its own limitations with some french thrown in."

When label bosses Frank & Tony step up for their Housebeat Dub, they keep the essential mood but introduce a thick, fat groove that works just as well in conveying the mood. 

"Our remix is a strictly dancefloor approach," says Frank, "an extended psychedelic beat rework perfect for late night, early morning vibes".

Up next on Brooklyn’s Scissor & Thread is the latest EP from @Snad, aka Shyam Anand (also known as Spandrel), the Berlin-based artist whose discography already spans labels like Smallville, Minibar, 20:20 Vision, Phonica AM, TerraFirm, Running Back, Cabinet, Kimochi and Dungeon Meat with remixes for names including Seafoam and Chez Damier. 

A trusted selector and producer in the underground, Snad has steadily built a reputation for deeply considered productions that balance classic inspiration with his own forward-thinking edge.

The AM Yard EP opens with its title track, a warm, hazy cut rooted in the kind of bassline architecture that recalls Chez n Trent’s Morning Factory but reshaped with Snad’s signature dreamlike touch. 

Anticip8 fanchors the release with a more direct energy, rolling, insistent and focused on the floor, balancing stripped-down drive of dusty samples wrung through his digitakt with just enough harmonic flourish to pull the listener inward. 

On the flip, The Pursuit follows in a slightly different mode, drawing on experimental vocoder techniques and filtered percussion creating a hypnotic push-and-pull that feels as intricate as it is understated.

Rounding things out, label heads Francis Harris and Anthony Collins, under their Frank & Tony alias, reimagine The Pursuit with their Housebeat Remix, extending its atmospherics into an even deeper headspace that glides effortlessly into late-night territory.

Tomi Chair, Tominori Hosoya - Tropical Imagination

The latest transmission from Francis Harris’ exquisite Scissor And Thread imprint showcases the many talents of Tokyo’s Tomi Chair aka Tominori Hosoya. The DJ and producer goes by both names, and here presents five tracks of lush, emotional music veering between ambient excursions and dance floor heaters. 

The original version of title track 'Tropical Imagination' opens the EP, and is a deep and thoughtful dance floor number. Elegant chords set the tone while the percussion adds a silky funkiness that’s impossible to ignore. The 'Dream Version' strips the track down to its pads and atmospheres.  

Next up is Tomi Chair’s 'Heat Exhaustion' - an exceptionally beautiful beatless piece that drifts through droney pads and occasional fragments of minor key melody. 

Using the Tominori Hosoya moniker, side B begins with 'We Are Here' - another powerfully restrained piece that merges woody percussion with low key pads and field recordings to create a magical whole. 

Francis Harris adds his touch to 'Heat Exhaustion' with his respectful Reform version, adding skittering percussion and underpinning the piece with a leftfield ambient house edge that builds and builds. Another essential addition to the Scissor And Thread catalog.

Alexander Albrecht returns to Francis Harris' Scissor & Thread imprint under his Melquí­ades guise for the Excerpts EP. As with his previous release on the label, Blue Caves, the Melbourne producer delivers a rich and affecting release, blending genres and moods with ease. 

"The idea behind this EP", says Alex Albrecht, "was to capture moments and "excerpts" of my improvised live set. I've used field recordings from a number of places from around the world as inspiration (including my recent visit to New York for the last S&T Tour) for the individual tracks - there's a variety of genres within the release but essentially they were just improvised extended jam sessions. I then chose some interesting excerpts for the record."

'Portal' kicks off the EP, a deep and woozy track with a strong groove, layered with pads and effects that radically enriches the dancefloor cut. 

'Tower Of The Sun' utilizes a similar driving beat, heavy on the hi-hats, but with a more submerged mood, punctuated with distant blasts and shards of noise. 

'Schaefer Street' also employs snappy percussion and snares, intertwined with bubbling melody and ethereal pads and washes. 

The same track is given a re-work by Patrice Scott, thickening up the groove and providing the most out-and-out dancefloor friendly track of the EP, while maintaining the fragments of deep and jazzy melody.

Nadia Khan returns on Scissor and Thread for another sublime mini LP, Port Ana. Based in North Carolina, Khan first drew a lot of attention via a cassette release on Where To Now? Records in 2015. 
Her sophomore statement was the beautiful In Gleam released in 2018 on Francis Harris’ Brooklyn-based label, which set the tone for these five tracks of meditative music. 
The title track Port Ana opens the journey - a gentle, droning soundscape with effortlessly bewitching glints of melody. 
Conversation follows on, drawing on loops and textures to create the background for a deep, pulsing kick drum. The sounds shift and evolve, leaving a hazy sense of movement to drift away to. 
Next up is Objects In Form which presents a fragile chord progression that barely holds itself together, surrounded by shifting pads and swathes of reverb. 
Rain Again is presented here in two versions. The original combines ethereal sounds, weightless and adrift, while the Lawrence remix firmly grounds the track with a hypnotic, deep groove. The Dial boss provides another remix for the digital release that further plays with the textures of the original to create something that works both for an open minded dancefloor and as a home listening experience.
