Mix of the Week #581: Franz Scala

It’s not easy ploughing a furrow that ain’t already been ploughed in dance music, but Tim Paris makes it look easy.  Nestling somewhere between the sideways slant of a sepia Sunday morning and the electrostatic seduction of a Saturday night, Tim has carved out a cultural niche that is his, and his alone. 

Through his label Marketing Music, Tim has spent years pushing out some of the most distinctive and unconventional house records around. His long-standing collaboration with Ivan Smagghe as It’s a Fine Line is a testament to his ongoing hunt for the unexpected – always a step away from the obvious.

His own productions stretch from the fiercely original (It’s a Fine Line – Woman) to the beautifully restrained (Outback, Stones & Vinyl), and his remixes – for the likes of Metronomy, Polo & Pan, The XX, Silicone Soul, Salif Keita, and Telepopmusik – show a producer who never plays it safe.

Off the dancefloor, he’s made just as much noise: over 50 international performances with Belgian choreographer Nicolas Musin, plus work for France TV, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and the Philharmonie de Paris have all borne his unmistakable sonic fingerprint.

Now, Tim’s back with a new solo release on Live at Robert Johnson – That Boy. A return to the club, yes, but also a reflection of everything he’s soaked up along the way. Rough-edged, refined, and unmistakably Tim Paris.

A sad private issue has kept me from posting for the last two months, but there is a huge mix that's waiting to be released since around the same time so now I can't let you wait any longer and have to finally put it out here where you can listen to this amazing hour of music of one of my "heroes":

@FredBerthet aka DJ Steef in my opinion is one of the most skilled editors out there. The way he crafts reknown songs into mesmerizing 21st century bangers of mighty groove and lost-in-sound contemplativeness, distilling their essentials, enhancing their atmosphere, sexyness and trippiness with perfectly dosed dub elements for me is absolutely mindblowing - I would really love to hear him playing live at a party! For those who like his music as much as I do, I recommend checking his vinyl outlet Biomix or his Bandcamp, where you can find some Biomix in digital format or delve into his current digital project "Love Saves".

I really hope you will enjoy this mix as much as I did, being excited by the beauty, intensity, profoundness and workmanship of those edits from beginning to end.

Wow, Fred Berthet's episode #54 has surpassed 500 plays, something which none of the last 10 episodes has yet achieved. I am very happy about that and I guess it's about time to release Dub Discode #55, hoping for similar enthusiasm!

We wholeheartedly welcome artist and DJ @Til_von_Push into our series. We contacted Til because of the numerous great mixes he sports at his profile and we are very happy Til invested parts of his precious time to create this extraordinary mixtape for us.

His funky mix exhibits compelling basslines, laid-back grooves, dubbed out spaciness and chilled out atmospheres, a combination which totally fits into the Dub Disco vision and a proper soundtrack to escort the last remnants of summer with some easy going sexiness. I want to emphasize specifically how Til manages to find an extraordinary balance of precise sense of style and keeping the hour excitingly diverse. Bravo!

Dub Discodes #55: Til von Push

Up next on Brooklyn’s Scissor & Thread is the latest EP from @Snad, aka Shyam Anand (also known as Spandrel), the Berlin-based artist whose discography already spans labels like Smallville, Minibar, 20:20 Vision, Phonica AM, TerraFirm, Running Back, Cabinet, Kimochi and Dungeon Meat with remixes for names including Seafoam and Chez Damier. 

A trusted selector and producer in the underground, Snad has steadily built a reputation for deeply considered productions that balance classic inspiration with his own forward-thinking edge.

The AM Yard EP opens with its title track, a warm, hazy cut rooted in the kind of bassline architecture that recalls Chez n Trent’s Morning Factory but reshaped with Snad’s signature dreamlike touch. 

Anticip8 fanchors the release with a more direct energy, rolling, insistent and focused on the floor, balancing stripped-down drive of dusty samples wrung through his digitakt with just enough harmonic flourish to pull the listener inward. 

On the flip, The Pursuit follows in a slightly different mode, drawing on experimental vocoder techniques and filtered percussion creating a hypnotic push-and-pull that feels as intricate as it is understated.

Rounding things out, label heads Francis Harris and Anthony Collins, under their Frank & Tony alias, reimagine The Pursuit with their Housebeat Remix, extending its atmospherics into an even deeper headspace that glides effortlessly into late-night territory.
