So long in the dark

I was trying to write a novel about the nature of time, how it’s always too fast or too slow
and I came to remember that first chance meeting on a night so many Prime Ministers ago
the kind of fertile night in the age of mistakes when the luck might have fallen our way 
but we both didn’t know what we wanted, and we didn’t yet know what to say
so we took a walk, with a shortcut through the park
then we said so long in the dark 

the revolution missed the bus and hair got shorter and I crawled into the belly of the beast 
pushing back the walls in a suit and a tie, wading through the famine while I waited for the feast 
milestones relentlessly turning into millstones, deadlines for the living dead 
on the treadmill, fighting for breath, fighting for nothing, losing the thread
reads like a nightmare, biting worse than the bark   
the road was so long, so long in the dark

I missed the writing there on the wall, I wasn’t ready for the crash
and when the same damn wall came tumbling down everything turned to ash
then as the dust was settled it appeared I had made an escape
and the road was calling, the rain was falling, and luck took on a different shape
hard to recognise, that moment when you can do nothing but disembark
when you’ve been so long in the dark

Hard to recognise, with much shorter hair, and a studied air of allure
but I knew her at once by the sound of her voice that age had made so pure
airport announcements still echoing in the swirl of the oriental air,  
the years had treated her so much better than me, but I could see she’d had her share 
another chance meeting, in this foreign land, I’d been moving forward like a shark,
flying through the night, so long in the dark

she said you guys with moustaches all look alike, as she struggled to remember my name
we shared our stories of shovelling shit that sounded so much the same 
it’s like taxis, she said, some ride in the back, some always ride in the front 
and now I understand, it’s not that I'm special, I just don’t seem to want what other people want
clues to the thread often hide in shadows, unlit statues in a park
waiting so long in the dark 

why, in the end, do we find that we know so much less than we knew when we started? 
year upon year, more stuck in the mud, and feeling so heavy hearted
once again, we might have kissed, but somehow the moment passed 
maybe I’d already hit bottom, maybe I just couldn't be arsed
I reached in to light her cigarette, but couldn't get a spark,
need refuelling, so long in the dark 

so maybe it’s a novel, or maybe it’s one of those independent art house flicks
I know how it starts, I know how it ends, I know all the narrative tricks 
I know the song that is playing when the climax steadily rises 
but I don't know what it all means, so there’s still a few surprises 
wouldn't be a shock if I missed the mark
wouldn't be the first time, I’ve been so long in the dark
